Provide phlebotomy service on in-house patients, outpatients and at off-site locations. Perform venipuncture and capillary methods on patient populations ranging from neonate to geriatric; patient identification; and specimen transport; in accordance with laboratory standards. Complete various clerical duties, including the entering of patient's orders in the Laboratory Information System (LIS). Performs specimen processing for the core laboratory. Excellent listening and communication skills are essential.
Education & Experience:
High School or equivalent.
Graduate of approved Phlebotomy Training School preferred.
Phlebotomy experience preferred.
Hospital experience preferred.
Certification/Licensure:
ASCP, NPA or equivalent, certification or eligible preferred.
Valid Driver's License may be required depending on job assignment and is required for Vineland assignment.
Knowledge & Skills:

MAJOR FUNCTION:
Perform diagnostic testing on patient samples and analyze test results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits. Ensure operation of laboratory instrumentation by calibrating; completing preventive maintenance requirements; troubleshooting malfunctions; evaluating new equipment and techniques. Perform, evaluate, and record quality control and institute corrective action as appropriate. Take part in proficiency sample testing, when appropriate. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public. Perform any other duties necessary to run an efficient and effective laboratory. Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology or related field OR
For HEW/HHS - High school graduate or equivalent with 50-week military training as Medical Lab Specialist OR Graduate of an approved Medical Laboratory or Clinical Laboratory training program.
1 to 3 years clinical laboratory experience preferred
For HEW/HHS - 15 years clinical laboratory experience required.
Certification:
ASCP, MLS or equivalent level eligible at date of hire required.
HEW/HHS certification required as a technologist under the revised Medicare/CLIA '67 regulations (42 CFR 493.1433) published on March 14, 1990 (55 FR 9538).

Short Description
The Lead Lab Assistant functions as the evening shift point person for phlebotomy operations. This role balances hands-on specimen collection and processing with staff oversight, troubleshooting, and communication with supervisors. By ensuring adequate coverage, supporting staff, and escalating issues appropriately, the Lead Lab Assistant promotes safe, efficient, and high-quality laboratory services.
Monitors and coordinates phlebotomist workflow during evening and weekend shifts to ensure timely patient collections and equitable workload distribution. Ensures adequate phlebotomy coverage by arranging meal break coverage, filling staffing shortages, and redistributing assignments when needed. Acts as first point of contact for phlebotomists during shift for questions, support, and immediate problem-solving.
Performs blood collections when workload demands exceed staffing or when technical assistance is required. Provides hands-on support in high-volume or difficult collection situations. Ensures adherence to patient identification, labeling, and infection control standards.
Identifies and resolves routine issues related to phlebotomy, specimen handling, and workflow interruptions. Escalates unresolved or complex issues to the shift supervisor or charge tech in a timely manner. Documents and communicates relevant shift events or concerns to leadership for follow-up.
Perform specimen receiving, accessioning, and processing activities. Ensures proper sample identification, integrity, and dispatch to appropriate laboratory sections. Perform with add-on testing, referral specimens, and pneumatic tube operations.
Responds professionally to phone inquiries regarding specimen collection, and test status. Dispatches stat phlebotomist for nursing homes. Provides guidance to staff and clinical units on collection requirements or escalates as needed. Serves as a communication link between phlebotomy staff and laboratory supervisors.
Accurately documents specimen-related activities in LIS and section logs. Ensures proper tracking of send-outs and referral testing documentation. Supports clerical functions to maintain smooth operations during evening shifts.
Monitors adherence to safety, infection control, and HIPAA regulations by phlebotomy staff. Reports hazards, incidents, or compliance concerns promptly. Assists in training and mentoring new or less experienced lab assistants and phlebotomists.
Monitors equipment used during the evening shift (refrigerators, freezers, pneumatic tube stations, centrifuges) and documents results. Ensures supplies are stocked and available to avoid workflow disruptions.

Short Description
This is a working supervisor position. The supervisor will have a bench assignment when needed, helping to fill in schedule gaps and will maintain personal competency in areas of expertise.
The supervisor will be responsible for oversight of technical personnel working evening/night shifts including assigning/directing work, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
The supervisor will assist technical managers by ensuring staff compliance in following procedures as written and may assist with competency assessment of staff.
Supervisory functions include completing all staff schedules, payroll responsibilities and enforcing all hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Participates in the selection process of new hires. Reports inappropriate behaviors or actions to manager and participates in coaching sessions of staff in a direct and confidential manner. All progressive discipline of staff members are reviewed by the Manager or Director.
The supervisor supports individual and departmental achievement through strong and effective employee engagement and the use of recognition methods; completes rounding on all staff employees.
