Institute Of Public Safety company history timeline

1960

The origin of organized law enforcement training in Maine dates back to the late 1960's when the Federal Law Enforcement Assistance Agency made funds available through the Maine Criminal Justice Planning and Assistance Agency for improving the operation of the criminal justice system.

1967

1968

1968:The South Carolina Police Academy was created with a $30,000 LEAP (Law Enforcement Assistance Program) Grant given to SLED. Having to first be employed by a law enforcement agency, the first class graduated in September.

1972

1972: Classes began at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in its present site.

1974

1974: The driving range was added to the SCCJA site and legislation facilitated the creation of the Criminal Justice Academy's Hall of Fame.

1977

1977 - Dispatcher training curriculum developed.

1979

1979: A three story dorm wing and 2 story office building built on the SCCJA site.

1980

1980- Mandatory in-service training for corrections officers takes effect.

1982

1982 - Final report on the Law Enforcement Task Analysis is completed.

1983

1983 - Training for part-time and reserve police officers is mandated by the Legislature.

1984

[note 10] The Office of Justice Programs was established by the Justice Assistance Act of 1984.

1985

1985 - Academy responsible for administration of Justice Assistance Act funds for Maine.

1986

1986 - Technical Assistance Program for small law enforcement agencies is initiated.

1988

1988-89: Revisions to the Training Act enacted a mandatory continued training provision whereby officers' certification cards expire every 3 years and specific number of in-service training hours are required during the certification cycle.

1990

1995

1995 - The Board established minimum physical fitness and academic standards for all officers entering the Municipal / County Basic Police School.

1996

Effective January 1, 1996 each law enforcement agency is required to report to the Academy all excessive use of force complaints and the disposition of those complaints.

1997

1997- Governor Angus King submitted a ten million dollar bond package to the Appropriations Committee for the renovation or construction of a new Criminal Justice Academy.

1998

1, 1998, the Peace Officer Professional Standards, through the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council, as a result of Gov.

2000

2000-01: Two interactive distance learning classrooms and computer labs were established to initiate the beginning of optional distance learning training delivery.

2000- The Maine Criminal Justice Academy's staff and programs moved to a new facility in Vassalboro, Maine.

2003

2003: A new Basic Law Enforcement Student Manual was developed and the Physical Abilities Test (PAT) procedure was approved and implemented.

2006

2006: Regional training sites continued to be researched and implemented to accommodate and expand advanced and specialized training opportunities.

2007

2007: The Law Enforcement Training Council was appointed.

2009

2009: Plans to construct a "Village Complex" with facilities to exclusively support and facilitate all Basic Law Enforcement classes were completed, staffing initiated and implementation begun as a result of the approved funding.

2010

2010: Ground was broken in February and construction began on the new "Village Complex". The Basic Law Enforcement Training Program was expanded and upgraded to 12 weeks from 9.

CrimeSolutions was launched in 2010 as a public database of criminal justice programs, all rated according to the strength of available evidence for or against their effectiveness.

2013

2013: The Academy introduced a new learning management system module, ACADIS, to the Academy staff.

2016

2016: Academy representatives attended the CALEA conference in Charleston, SC and the Academy was awarded its initial Public Safety Training Academy Accreditation on November 5.

2020

Completion of this course satisfies the mandatory in-service training requirements for 2020 only.JUNE – After nearly three months of suspended training, law enforcement basic training classes resumed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

2021

DECEMBER - DOCJT announced the re-opening of a training facility at the University of Louisville’s Shelby Campus to better meet Kentucky peace officers' training needs, beginning in 2021.
