POSITION TITLE: Non-Credit Instructor - English Language Arts (Part-time) DEPARTMENT: Economic and Business Development, Adult Education REPORTS TO: Associate Director of Adult Education POSITION STATUS: This is a part-time, non-unit, non-benefitted position. This position is subject to grant budget appropriations.
SALARY: $29.40 per hour.
STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Adult Education (AE) instructors provide instruction for adults and out-of-school youth in basic skills upgrading, high school equivalency preparation, and college and career readiness. Assignments may include, but are not limited to, teaching High School Equivalency Preparation at the adult basic level (ABE) to the adult secondary level (ASE). Instructors are responsible for maintaining student assessment results and tracking student progress throughout the year. Instructors will meet with students to define and update goals. The Instructor participates in the development and implementation of program curriculum that addresses the AE College and Career Readiness Standards and integrates employment skills.
This is an in-person, 18 hour per week teaching position on the Fall River campus. The current opening is for an English Language Arts instructor who specializes in evidence-based reading instruction at the pre-high school and high school levels. Classes run Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 9:30am to 1:30pm, with additional paid time for preparation and planning, professional development, and required attendance at monthly afternoon staff meetings.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Prepare and instruct students who have a variety of learning styles, with appropriate level materials and teaching strategies, in a face-to-face and/or remote/distance learning environment.
* Provide instruction using evidence-based reading practices.
* Prepare students for academic and career pathways.
* Develop a syllabus and daily lesson plans based upon assigned classes, program curriculum, and instructional priorities.
* Integrate digital literacy into curriculum and instruction.
* Oversee independent student work in a digital software platform
* Utilize educational software and equipment as warranted.

Qualifications
The English As A Second Language Instructor - Naval War College English As A Second Language Classes (ESL Classes) shall have consecutive employment in a position with comparable responsibilities within the past five (5) years, Must be able to use a computer to communicate via email; and proficient in Microsoft Office Products (Word/Excel/PowerPoint) and related tools and technology required for the position.
Work products shall be thorough, accurate, appropriately documented, and comply with established criteria. The candidate shall ensure that duties are performed in a competent and professional manner that meets milestones/delivery schedules as outlined.
Education: Minimum of a bachelor's degree | Master's Degree in a related field (Proffered)
Possess a valid Newport, RI (or other recognized state) Teaching Licenses in the subject area of interest and in English as a Second Language (ESL).
Demonstrated expertise and experience teaching English Language Learners as outlined by the Newport, RI (or other recognized state) Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Demonstrated success in developing the English language proficiency of secondary school English Language Learners.
Experience in curriculum development for English as a Second Language (ESL) and English language learner (ELL) Classes.
College-level teaching experience and Proven technological proficiency.
The ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
A moderate amount of experience teaching English as a second language in higher education or other related experience
Master's in ESLEFL pedagogy, linguistics, or a related field of language teaching, experience teaching International Teaching Assistants, experience in critiquing writing skills and administrative experience.
Experience and availability for teaching Bi-weekly ESL classes on the Intermediate and Advanced levels.
Two Years' Experience Critiquing writing skills and Administrative experience Teaching ITA's
Experience and International TEFL Academy (ITA) Certification for TEFL - Teaching English as a Foreign Language, or simply, English language instruction for non-native speakers.
Flexibility to adapt to schedule changes

The department has 16 research faculty members, 8 teaching faculty members, and 16
graduate teaching assistants. We offer programs leading to BA, BS, MS, and PhD
degrees in mathematics, with applied mathematics options at all levels. We co-govern
the Data Science Program, which houses a BA, BS, online graduate certificate, and
online MS degree. The interdisciplinary nature of our department will provide the new
faculty member with opportunities to interact with a broad range of colleagues in areas
such as Oceanography, Computer Science, Statistics, Physics, Engineering, and Life
Sciences.
Key Responsibilities:
Responsibilities may include teaching a variety of undergraduate courses, coordinating
multi-section courses, teaching large size classes, teaching general education courses
aimed at students throughout the campus, and course and project development. Course
development involves preparing exams and syllabi, maintaining online resources and
participation in all aspects of the assessment cycle for courses. The course load is 24
credits per year with a mixture of 3-credit and 4-credit courses. In addition to other
responsibilities, teaching faculty are expected to participate in department service
activities as they pertain to their normal instructional responsibilities
Required Qualifications:
1. Master's or PhD in Mathematics or related field by the time of appointment, (August
2026).
2. Experience teaching college level mathematics courses.

undergraduate level.
