The ultrasound technologist performs ultrasound procedures and related techniques, producing images for the interpretation by, and at the request of, a licensed independent practitioner. May be required to learn to scan vascular exams i.e. venous duplex scans. Will perform direct patient care in a compassionate and timely manner. Under the direction of Radiology leadership, the Ultrasound tech performs duties directly involved with a variety of technical procedures in the use of ultrasound for the diagnosis of disease or pathology.
Essential Job Functions:
Demonstrates knowledge of direct patient care by evaluating the patient, verifying patient ID, and related information to assure appropriate procedure is performed
Explains procedure to patient; prepares patient for procedure by obtaining and recording patient history and consent form (if applicable)
Ensures patient comfort, privacy, and safety during procedure; monitors condition of patient and medical equipment that may be disturbed due to the nature of exam and report changes to patient care services
Documents sonographer's impressions and relays findings to physician
Obtains and records images necessary to demonstrate normal and pathological findings; documents all pertinent information, e.g., lab values, patient histories; demonstrates and maintains clinical competency particularly related to patients who are: newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric as deemed necessary by designated facility
Participates in performance improvement projects
Assists department in achieving successful results in all federal and state and local agency audits.
Participates in the education/instruction of students and the orientation of new staff. -high level disinfection probes per joint commission standards.
Must use various ultrasound modalities dependent on the type of anatomy being examined.
Must become proficient in recognizing cross-sectional anatomy and understanding of related technology.
Demonstrates favorable guest relations and continues to promote values of the hospital in daily work performance.
May also perform other related patient care duties
Licensing/Certification
Credentialed in Ultrasound technology by one of the following: Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) or American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), or Sonographer by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) (required)

Under the supervision of the Neurovascular Laboratory Manager, the Neurovascular Sonographer is responsible for performing comprehensive ultrasound studies of the intracranial and extracranial cerebrovascular system. This includes carotid duplex evaluations, vertebral artery assessments, and a broad range of Transcranial Doppler (TCD) examinations to evaluate cerebral blood flow and vascular integrity.
The sonographer collaborates in the interpretation of diagnostic results, contributes to the education and training of physicians, fellows, residents, and sonography students, and participates in peer interviews and quality initiatives. A strong commitment to patient safety, clinical excellence, and continuous learning is essential in this role.
A caregiver in this position works day/evening/night/weekend, from 8:00am-4:30pm or 9:00am-5:30pm.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
* Perform ultrasound studies (e.g. Carotid duplex examinations, vertebral artery duplex examinations, Transcranial Doppler examinations).
* Consult with the referring physician regarding patient's medical history and selection of appropriate procedures and equipment required for proper diagnosis; reviews charts, previous reports and requisition prior to exam.
* Prepare patient for examination and explain the procedure before and while performing studies; assist patient on and off exam table and with dressing/undressing as required.
* Electronically acquires sonographs and labels correctly with appropriate data (patient name, clinic number, date, scan type, orientation and performing technologist's initials) for the patient's record; maintains records of all examinations performed and completes financial information for each study; obtains previous studies needed for correlation or as requested by the Neurologist - Neuroradiologist.
* Participate in reading sessions with radiologist and contributes technical and professional knowledge to the final diagnostic impression.
* Assist Physicians with invasive examinations and related procedures requiring sterile technique.
* Perform checks on ultrasound equipment to assure proper function of equipment and notify clinical engineering of any equipment malfunctions.
* Ensure exam rooms are adequately supplied with linen and related medical supplies.
* Schedules all emergency patients for neurovascular examinations.
* Monitor all appointments scheduled for ultrasound examinations; performs preliminary research on patient when preparations are not provided; determines priority of patients based on the daily schedules.
* Assist with clinical instruction of ultrasound students and residents; assists in in-service education of staff members.
* Assist with orienting new employees to the equipment, department procedures and scanning protocols; provides demonstration of ultrasound equipment for staff and visitors.
* Assist in new investigational techniques, procedures and equipment; maintains state-of-the-art knowledge in the field through self-motivated education and attendance at appropriate conferences and symposiums.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

+ If working within MFM: perform obstetric ultrasounds on patients to include high risk patients. MFM ultrasound exams include nuchal translucency, anatomy, BPP's, growth scans, cervical lengths, MCA dopplers, UA dopplers, assisting with amniocentesis, CVS, and other procedures requested by the fetal care team.
+ If working within GYN/REI: perform gynecologic exams and assist with procedures on patients including TA/TV pelvic ultrasounds, endometriosis studies, SIS and HyCOSy procedures, IVF monitoring's, transfers and early OB scans.
+ Accurately complete reports, communicate findings and assist physicians with procedures.
+ Teach and train sonographers, students, fellows, and residents and attend educational department meetings.
+ Review patient history prior to exam.

Diagnostic Medical Sonographers use imaging devices that emit sound waves to create the image that will help physicians assess and diagnose various conditions. There are different kinds of imaging devices, this includes ultrasounds, sonograms, and echocardiograms. Generally sonographic imaging devices use a handheld probe, which is moved over the area being surveyed to create a two-dimensional or three-dimensional image. These devices can be used for therapy, diagnosis, and even to guide interventional procedures like biopsies or draining fluid collections.
**A caregiver in this position works PRN (as needed) variable shifts.**
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
+ Perform diagnostic sonographic imaging through the application of non-ionizing, high-frequency sound waves for patients of all ages.
+ Perform ultrasound studies (i.e. obstetrical, GYN, abdominal, retro peritoneal, small parts, pediatric, and vascular).
+ Consult with referring physicians regarding patients' medical history and selection of appropriate procedures and equipment required for proper diagnosis.
+ Review charts, previous reports and requisition prior to the exam.
+ Educate patients regarding procedures, equipment and exams to ensure understanding and cooperation.
+ Ensure patients' comfort and safety during and after the exam.
+ Assist with scheduling of patients and schedule all emergency patients for diagnostic ultrasound procedures.
+ Monitor all appointments scheduled for ultrasound examinations.
+ Perform preliminary research on patients when preparations are not provided and determine priority of patients based on the daily schedules.
+ Acquire, archive, transmit and print images via PACS.
+ Complete after hours transmission of images and appropriate paperwork.
+ Immediately report any malfunctions to help desk and PACS Administrator.
+ Process billing via RIS.
+ Ensure proper function of ultrasound equipment and notify clinical engineering of any equipment malfunctions.
+ Adequately supply exam rooms with linen and related medical supplies.
+ Assist with clinical instruction of ultrasound students and residents and in-service education of caregivers.
+ Assist with orienting new caregivers to the equipment, department procedures and scanning protocols.
+ Demonstrate ultrasound equipment for caregivers and visitors.
+ Potentially rotate through all diagnostic imaging modalities, sites and/or locations.
+ Assist in new investigative techniques, procedures and equipment.
+ Maintain the most up to date knowledge in the field through self-motivated education and attendance of appropriate conferences and symposiums.
+ Maintain RDMS and in good standing.
+ If working within the Imaging Institute, perform non-invasive vascular studies to include veins, arteries, pulse volume readings and assist the physician during invasive studies.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
+ Graduate of an accredited school in Diagnostic Medical Sonography and in good standing
+ If working within the OBGYN/Women's Health Institute, must be a Registered Diagnostic Sonographer (RDMS) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) within one year of hire. Certification within OB/GYN (RDMS, OB/GYN) must be obtained within one year of hire.
+ If working within the Imaging Institute, must be a Registered Diagnostic Sonographer (RDMS) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) RT(S) or RT(VS) upon hire. Must have one certification within Abdominal (RDMS, AB), OB/GYN (RDMS, OB/GYN) or Vascular (RVT, VT) through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) upon hire. The other two certifications must be obtained within 18 months of hire.
+ Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
+ One year of experience as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer
