In 1912, however, the school was closed due to a medical education reform.
In March 1914, the 19-year-old Kenji Miyazawa had a nose surgery at Iwate Hospital.
On June 18, 1947, the school was reorganized as Iwate Medical University, as a result of the post-war educational reform, with Sadanori Mita as the first president.
After 1956, the first 5-year plan and the second 5-year plan were implemented to expand the facilities, which were accomplished at an amazing speed.
In 1993, Hanamaki Onsen Hospital was established after a transfer of authority from the Japanese government.
Iwate University was incorporated as a national university in April 2004.
In April 2007, with the completion of the new Yahaba campus, the long-awaited School of Pharmacy was established.
In December 2015, Iwate University established the "Iwate University Ihatov Fund" in order to enhance education and research as well as to further promote study support for students.
