Systems Analysis and Optimization for Sustainable Environment and Natural Resources Management: The challenges of future climate change, population growth, megadroughts and extreme events, water scarcity, decarbonization, and zero waste, require advanced systems and risk analysis methodologies for monitoring and managing complex human-natural coupled systems. The desired candidate will have a strong track record in devising and leveraging DS/AI for developing resilient, efficient, and socially beneficial strategies for complex water, air, ecosystem, and other environmental and resource systems.
Harnessing Data Science/Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning/Deep Learning/Big Data for understanding Earth System changes to inform planning for adaptation and resilience: Large volumes of historical simulations and future climate projections are available from a wide range of climate and environmental models. Simultaneously, the abundance of data streams generated by satellite, airborne, and drone-based remote sensing and in-situ sensor systems holds enormous promise for real-time environmental monitoring. Mining and extracting information from such big data streams requires overcoming challenges associated with scale, discoverability, analysis, and interpretation. We seek candidates who leverage modern DS/AI tools to integrate large multi-scale datasets and process-based models to inform environmental and resource strategies for the 21 st century.
Data Science/Artificial Intelligence Applications in Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology: Human and Planetary health is shaped by more than 100,000 chemical compounds that are in commercial use and released into the environment. Protecting human health against exposures to these complex chemical mixtures and byproducts that result from their reactions, is a much greater challenge than quantifying the toxicity of specific chemicals. There has been a recent growth in applications of machine learning to identify the chemical composition of complex mixtures. Simultaneously, DS/AI-based computational toxicology methods are demonstrating promise in meeting the principles of the 3R's concept, especially replacement of animal testing. We seek candidates with expertise in the development and use of DS/AI methods in computational environmental chemistry and toxicology, to identify chemicals of concern in complex environmental mixtures and predict their toxicity.

The Public Health Nutrition Concentration
The PHN concentration integrates research, teaching, and hands-on practice to equip its graduates with the skills needed to positively impact the health and well-being of vulnerable populations around the world. Led by interdisciplinary faculty, PHN offers an array of courses on nutritional epidemiology, food insecurity, community nutrition, clinical nutrition research, and environmental and societal factors affecting food supply and policy.
The PHN has five dynamic and rigorous educational paths which are: 1) in-person Master of Public Health (MPH) track that can be done either part-time or full-time; 2) fully online, asynchronous MPH; 3) combined MPH/Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD), in which graduates qualify for dietetic internships to take the Commission of Dietetic Registration exam; 4) Advanced Certificate in Public Health Nutrition comprised of five PHN courses, and 5) 4+1 BS/MPH dual degree, a joint program with NYU Steinhardt. The flexibility of each program allows students to tailor their learning to their specific interests, skill set, and career objectives. At the core of all PHN activities is an emphasis on equity and food justice, so graduates will be equipped to assume leadership roles in both local and global settings.
Master of Public Health
The MPH in Public Health Nutrition, which is offered in a full-time, part-time, or fully remote format, comprises core courses, culminating experiences, and electives. The core courses provide traditional learning in subjects such as global environmental health, epidemiology, and health care policy. The culminating experience is an internship during which students complete a minimum of 180 hours of public health service, either through an applied practice experience seminar or an integrative learning experience seminar. For the elective portion of the degree, students can select from any graduate-level courses taught at GPH given they have completed the necessary prerequisites.
Combined MPH/DPD
This program is exclusively for students seeking to become registered dietitians (RD). The DPD requirements and the associated dietetic internship are the courses needed to take the Commission on Dietetic Registration exam and become an RD. Students are not required to complete the DPD requirements and dietetic internship before enrolling in the MPH program. Rather, the combined MPH and DPD allows students to complete DPD courses while matriculated in the MPH program. The dietetic internship begins after completion of all DPD courses. This educational track is one of two programs that include courses taught at NYU GPH and NYU Steinhardt.
Advanced Certificate in PHN
This is a 15-credit track during which students complete two core concentration courses and three electives within PHN. The certificate includes credits that satisfy the MPH degree requirements, so students in the other concentrations of the MPH program may also enroll.
4+1 BS/MPH Program
The 4+1 BS/MPH program is a five-year dual-degree program during which students concurrently work toward an MPH in PHN while they earn a BS in Nutrition from NYU Steinhardt. This is an expedited program that enables students to earn both degrees, while requiring less time and lower tuition than is needed to complete each program separately. This streamlined program is for highly motivated students with aspirations of assuming leadership positions in public health nutrition settings that require a systemic approach to addressing health disparities. In January 2024, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics will adopt a minimum requirement of a master's degree for entry-level registered dietitians. Therefore, this program is expected to be in high demand in the coming years because it will allow students to achieve their goals of being an RD in a shorter amount of time.

Clinical

Fellows are present in the ICUs as they participate in integrated fellowship between the Departments of Surgery and Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine.
Academic
Resident, fellow and medical student supervision and instruction are major components of the position. Education is focused on general surgeyr residents, ICU fellows and Acute Surgery fellows.
Research
Research endeavors will be encouraged and supported. Clinical reearch and outcome studies are abundant. Our current faculty have close colaboratiosn with the Johns Hopkins Surgery center for Outcomes Research (JSCOR), The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School fo Oublic Health, and the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality. Position Description:
We are seeking an adjunct faculty member to teach an asynchronous online course on the fundamental science of how the climate system works. The instructor will teach the observed and projected impacts of climate change through the examination of observational data and climate/Earth system model predictions and projections. The candidate should be comfortable teaching: (1) physics and chemistry of the atmosphere, focused on the greenhouse effect; (2) the carbon cycle and its relation to the energy system; and (3) predictions and projections of climate change. Students will engage with the material through class discussions and a diverse set of assignments. The ideal candidate will exhibit a robust background in climate science, physical/atmospheric/ocean systems modeling as well as experience with climate policy. This expertise is crucial for a course that examines climate change's impacts through the lens of data and model projections. The Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) division seeks non-tenure-track adjunct faculty to teach courses within the MA in Writing program. Our classes are offered online--asynchronously in Canvas or in real-time via Zoom. We are looking for fiction and nonfiction writers who have published extensively. The ideal candidate will have published at least one book and will have online teaching experience. Of particular interest are candidates who have experience engaging students from diverse backgrounds. We are looking for faculty who can teach one or more of the following courses:
Fiction Workshop - 490.660
Fiction Workshops concentrate on intensive writing and revision, with some required reading. As members of a general workshop, students submit short stories or novel chapters to their instructor and peers for critique. Typically, two or three stories or chapters are submitted during a semester; revisions are usually required. Workshop participants also submit detailed critiques of their fellow students' writing.
Nonfiction Workshop - 490.670
These general workshops give students extensive experience in writing and revising their factual work, regardless of topic or form. Submissions are critiqued by peers as well as by the instructor. Students typically submit two to four essays, articles, or book chapters. Revisions, exercises, and readings also are required. Students may take this general workshop or any specialized workshop to meet the requirement of three workshops for the MA in Writing. The 670-1-2 sequential numbering of workshops relates only to the three annual academic terms and does not indicate cumulative coursework.
Writing Memoir & Personal Essay Workshop - 490.693
Writers have long enjoyed a major impact on contemporary thought by producing compelling essays about personal experiences, feelings, or ideas. In this specialized nonfiction workshop, students experiment with memoir and the personal essay as distinct forms and as explorations of the self. Seminal essays are read to clarify students' thoughts and to help them develop their own voice and style in personal nonfiction. This workshop counts as one of the three required for a nonfiction degree. Enrollees must have completed or waived the nonfiction core courses. Fiction students may enroll only with program permission.
Heritage of Literature--Examining the 20th Century - 490.684
This reading elective examines the historical development of fiction and nonfiction from a craft perspective, emphasizing the interrelationship of social and cultural development with the maturation of writing. Students learn to appreciate how contemporary authors have roots in the past, and how they themselves might be inspired by those who came before them. Readings and discussions will revolve around William Carlos Williams and T.S. Eliot, two giants who locked horns for forty years and whose disagreements have gone a very long way toward shaping literature in their own era and ever since. All of the authors students study in the class purposely challenged narrative art in the name of forging new and more relevant literary models. The reading list may include James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, Virginia Woolf, James Baldwin, Philip Roth, and Toni Morrison. The course requires extensive reading as well as creative and critical writing. Both nonfiction and fiction students are invited to enroll.
Voice in Fiction and Nonfiction - 490.745
In this cross-concentration craft elective, students examine aspects of voice in fiction and factual writing, considering how style, point of view, tone, structure, and culture all contribute to an author's or narrator's individual writing personality. Students use exercises to strengthen their individual styles or the voices of the characters they portray. Readings include novels, short stories, essays, articles, and nonfiction books, as well as articles on craft. Class assignments may include response writings and original fiction or nonfiction as well as oral presentations. This course is the dual-concentration version of 490.683 Voice in Modern Fiction, which covers only fictional works, and 490.705 Crafting a Nonfiction Voice, for factual writers.
