In 1957 he was admitted to the New Jersey State Bar, and two years later, he left his job as clerk to practice law with the Newark, New Jersey, firm of Lum, Biunno & Tompkins, where he remained for the next two years.

Finally, in 1961, Kelleher pulled up stakes and headed south to Texas, where he joined the San Antonio law firm of Matthews, Nowlin, Macfarlane & Barrett as a partner.

1966: Joined fledgling Southwest Airlines Co. as a legal consultant.

1967

In March of 1967, Kelleher incorporated Air Southwest Company, the name that was later changed to Southwest Airlines Company.

Barrett began working for Kelleher in 1967 as his legal secretary and gradually moved up through the ranks, serving on the management team for several years before being appointed president.

1969

By 1969 the big airlines seemed to have won: Southwest ran out of money, and the board of directors wanted to shut the company down.

Starting in 1973, Southwest has posted profits every year, a record envied by the airline's competitors.

1974

In 1974 Southwest became the first airline to offer a profit-sharing plan; employees owned 13 percent of the company's common stock.

1978

1978: Named President of Southwest Airlines.

1979

1979: Congress passed Wright Amendment, intended to clip Southwest's wings.

The next big battle came in 1979 when the powerful Texas Congressman Jim Wright sponsored a law that prohibited airlines flying out of Love Field from servicing any states other than those which bordered Texas—New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana.

1982

1982: Named CEO of the year by Financial World magazine.

Kelleher was eventually asked to take on increasing responsibilities at Southwest; he became the company's chairman, CEO, and president in 1982, even though he had little executive experience.

1992
