Before the oil activity the community had a few buildings located along a section-line road, and a post office had been established on June 26, 1901.
Kiefer, originally known as Praper, grew as an oil-boom town after the development of the Glenn Pool field in 1905.
Because it had the nearest railroad for transporting the Glenn Pool crude to Texas refineries, by November 1906 the community had become a major shipping point.
On December 12, 1906, the post office was redesignated Kiefer and moved two and one-half miles to the west.
Anselm Kiefer was born on March 8, 1945, in Donaueschingen, Baden-Württembürg, Germany, and raised near the east bank of the Rhine in the region of the Black Forest.
In 1969, during a trip through Switzerland, France, and Italy, Kiefer staged a series of photographic self-portraits called Occupations, in which he dressed in paramilitary clothes and struck a pose that imitated Hitler in various natural and monumental settings.

He is best known for his paintings (1997.4ab), which have grown increasingly large in scale with additions of lead, broken glass, and dried flowers or plants.
