Kingsport Public Works company history timeline

1802

An interesting note about the early stages of Kingsport is that it has been part of so many great states and territories, without moving an inch. It was also a part of the short lived State of Franklin, but in 1802 Tennessee drew up new borders with Virginia and Kingsport has been a part of Tennessee ever since.

1822

In 1822 the town of Christianville and the town of Rossville combined to form the incorporated town of Kingsport.

In 1822, the Holston River was first chartered by boat.

1864

The Battle of Kingsport, fought on December 13, 1864 took place on the banks of the Holston River at what is now Rotherwood Bridge.

1917

The first pumper, purchased in 1917, is still owned by the department and is displayed at Station Two in an outdoor showroom built by firefighters.

There were 117 streetlights included in the 1917 budget.

1917 There was no need for paved parking in the city – shoppers could pull their team of horses or Model-T off the road into fields around Broad and Center Streets.

Kingsport adopted the Council-Manager form of government when it re-incorporated in 1917 and has proudly, and continuously, maintained this form of government.

1919

The Kingsport Public Library was started by five women in 1919 when they formed the Kingsport Book Club.

1921

In 1921, the group formally organized and the founders were joined by: Mrs.

When the library opened in 1921, the collection totaled 400 books and there were 41 family members (.07 percent of the population). A maximum number of 3 books could be checked out at one time for two weeks.

1971

A replacement for the Watauga Street Station was built in 1971 on Island Street to protect the central business district.

1990

During Chief Caldwell’s term, Kingsport’s growth continued and Fire Station 5 in Lynn Garden opened in 1990 and Fire Station 6 in Colonial Heights on Ft.

1992

Henry Doctor opened in 1992.

2000

During Chief Moser’s term, the department received accreditation by the Commission of Fire Accreditation International in the year 2000.

2001

In 2001, Charles A. White was appointed to the office of Fire Chief.

The Kingsport Fire Department was one of the first 40 Fire Departments in the world to obtain the Commission on Fire Accreditation International designation in 2001 and has been re-accredited four times since.

2016

The Kingsport Fire Department was reaccredited in 2016 by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International.

2022
