Kobe Steel USA Inc company history timeline

1988

October 1988 Kobelco Compressors (America), Inc. (currently Kobelco Compressors Manufacturing Indiana, Inc.) is established in Indiana, USA to make standard compressors.

In 1988, this office becomes Kobe Steel USA Inc., the United States headquarters of Kobe Steel.

In 1988 Kobe Precision Incorporated began producing aluminum substrates for magnetic computer discs.

In 1988 the Kobe Steel Europe Research Laboratory in Surrey, England, was opened.

In 1988 Kobe Steel America was reorganized into a holding company, Kobe Steel USA Inc., to manage Kobe's growing number of diversified United States holdings, which now numbered 15 companies.

1989

Kobe Copper Products, a United States subsidiary, made copper tubing for cooling systems, and in 1989 Stewart Bolling Company, a United States rubber and plastics firm, was acquired.

In 1989 USX, the largest United States steelmaker, formed a 50-50 partnership with Kobe to produce steel bars for Japanese automakers, who were now locating their plants inside the United States.

1990

Later in 1990 the Aluminum Company of America entered a 50-50 joint venture with Kobe to produce aluminum can stock in Japan.

In 1990 the Singapore office was incorporated as Kobe Steel Asia Pte Ltd.

1992

In June 1992 they created Kobe Alcoa Transportation Products Ltd. and Kobe Alcoa Transportation Products Inc. to produce and market transportation-industry aluminum sheet products in Japan and the United States, respectively.

1993

They established KAAL in July 1993 to manufacture aluminum can stock in Japan.

1994

June 1994 Kobelco Welding of Europe B.V. is established in the Netherlands to produce welding consumables.

1995

January 1995 Kobe Steel's rugby club wins the All-Japan Rugby Football Championship seven times in a row.

On April 1, 1995, Kobelco America Inc. (KAI) and Kobelco Construction Machinery (United StatesA.) Inc. (KCM), two of Kobe Steel's construction subsidiaries based in the United States, merged to form Kobelco America Inc.

Also in 1995 Kobe Steel began its venture into the electricity business.

1997

August 1997 Kobe CH Wire (Thailand) Co., Ltd. is established in Thailand to make CHQ wire.

The company set its sights on completely recovering from the loss within two years, and most of its goals were, in fact, met by the beginning of 1997.

2000

October 2000 Kobelco Compressors (Shanghai) Corporation is established in China to sell standard compressors.

2001

March 31 2001 Kobe Steel forms global alliance with CNH Global.

2002

April 2002 IPP business begins.

2004

2 Power Plant starts up in 2004.)

2005

September 2005 Kobe Steel celebrates its 100th anniversary.
