In 1948, Brannen and Albert Meyer began carrying out their vision of providing companionship, security, and compassionate care to seniors in Yakima.

Seeking to expand their mission, in 1956, the Meyers obtained a 10-year lease on the former Yakima County Hospital near the corner of 64th and Washington Avenues and opened the 184-bed West Valley Nursing Home.

Since 1974 there has been a series of attempts to revise the federal nursing home certification regulations.27 In 1974 the Office of Nursing Home Affairs began a study of the quality of care in nursing homes.
The HCFA also concluded that revisions of the certification procedures contained in Subpart S of the regulations were necessary (42 CFR Part 405), and began work on them in 1980 (internal HCFA documents).
Following a major expansion completed in 2002, Living Care Retirement Community now offers 188 retirement apartments, 39 assisted living apartments and 60 skilled nursing beds.
