KRBL was founded in 1889 in Lyallpur by two brothers–Khushi Ram and Behari Lal; the company name is an acronym of their names.
In 1947 following the partition of India KRBL reestablished itself and relocated its operations to Naya Bazar (Lahori Gate) in New Delhi.
KRBL started exporting rice in 1978 becoming the pioneers of packaged rice for the international community.
The Company, was incorporated on 30th March, 1993 & the certificate of Commencement of Business was obtained on 26th April, 1993 from the Registrar of Companies, Delhi and Haryana with the object to process paddy.
All the balances of the partnership firm as appearing in the books of account as on 31.03.1993 were transferred in the company's name at their book values.
In 1996 the Director General of Foreign Trade Government of India awarded KRBL with the recognition of Super Star Trading House for its increasing export success.
2000 - KRBL has launched its premium brand of basmati rice Doon.
In 2002 KRBL was listed at the National Stock Exchange.
-Board of Directors at its meeting held December 18, 2003 allotted 30,00,000 equity shares of Rs 10/- each at a premium of Rs 80/- per equity share on preferential basis.
In 2003, KRBL acquired a 65-acre rice processing, grading and packaging plant near Dhuri for ₹15.8 crore through a court auction.
In 2006 KRBL obtained the largest GDR issue of 12 million USD in the history of the Indian rice industry.
The Board of Directors of KRBL at its meeting held on 17 December 2009 considered and approved sub division of 1 (One) equity shares of the Company having face value of Rs.
The main object of subsidiary will be processing and sale of agro seeds.The Board of Directors of KRBL at its meeting held on 12 February 2013 have considered and taken a decision on Buy back of equity shares of the company.
On 13 December 2016 KRBL announced that as a forward integration step the company has set up a Furfuryl Alcohol plant at Bhasaur Dhuri district Sangrur in Punjab at a total cost of Rs 7 crore.
In 2016, it started operating from its fourth plant in Sonipat district.
On 10 March 2017 KRBL announced the launch of wholesome grain in the name and style of India Gate Quinoa.
