1829

It wasn't until 1829 that the Metropolitan Police Act was passed and the London Metropolitan Police Department was formed.

1844

New York City was the first to have an official police department in 1844.

1857

The first detective unit began in New York City in 1857.

1905

In order to deal with and prevent corruption and striking among local police forces, Pennsylvania established the first state police department in 1905.

1906

Nellie Wicks, a Head Attendant for the New York State Department of Corrections, becomes the first female law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty when she was fatally stabbed by an inmate on September 27, 1906.

1908

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was created in 1908 to investigate antitrust and fraud cases, as well as crimes committed on government property or by government officials.

1909

Ninety-six officers made the ultimate sacrifice in 1909.

1916

In 1916, he helped create the first university-level police educational program at the University of California, Berkeley.

1920

In 1920, the Department of Treasury created the first large federal police agency which was in charge of enforcing prohibition.

1957

Established as part of The Center for American and International Law (formerly the Southwestern Legal Foundation), the ILEA came into existence as the Southwestern Police Academy in 1957, on the campus of Southern Methodist University.

1992

In July of 1992, the ILEA, supported by a generous grant from the Meadows Foundation of Dallas, Texas, launched the Center for Law Enforcement Ethics.

1993

Closer supervision of police officers was recommended; foot patrols were replaced by motorized patrols, precinct houses were consolidated and more central police facilities constructed; and command functions were centralized in a headquarters staff (Uchida 1993).
