Summary
Functions as an emergency response medical professional that administers immediate medical care to victims of accidents, violence, and sudden illnesses such as cardiac arrests or strokes. Provides pre-hospital and intra-hospital advanced life support care from initial contact until patient care is relinquished to the accepting medical facility.
Job Duties
Represents the ambulance service while on duty at public service functions, expositions, and other public events and provides ambulance stand by services when necessary.
Documents full assessment and treatments in patient care charting software.
Cares for patients in psychiatric, medical, and traumatic crisis by providing medical, traumatic, and therapeutic services.
Serves as a member of a two-member ambulance crew responding to emergency and non-emergency calls.
Operates equipment such as bag valve mask resuscitators, external defibrillators, and electrocardiograms for advanced life support applications.
Assesses the nature and extent of injury or illness to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed such as stabilization, immobilization, lifting, and moving of victims from scene of any accident or catastrophe.
Responds to instructions from a dispatcher and drives and operates specially equipped emergency vehicles to specified locations at a safe and controlled speed.
Administers drugs via injection, intravenous procedures, or oral administration under the direction of a physician.
Communicates with professional medical personnel at emergency treatment facility to obtain instructions regarding treatment.
Cleans and decontaminates ambulance after transporting or treating any patient with infectious disease and reports infectious disease to relevant authorities.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma/GED
Ability to assess needs of acute and chronically ill patients and their families.
Ability to document and communicate pertinent information using computer and/or paper documentation tools.
Demonstrates age-specific competencies in the care of neonates, infants, toddlers, pre-schoolers, school aged, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients.
Knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions.
Must be able to apply advance knowledge and training, developing and executing a plan of care, and rapidly intervene in life-saving procedures.

The EMT‐P is an allied health professional who provides a wide range of patient care and transportation outside the hospital setting. Under emergency and non‐emergency conditions. The Paramedic will encounter all types of patients with complaints of chest pain to multiple patient accidents. The individual must be able to deal with all types of human responses from the patient, bystanders, and themselves. The Paramedic is responsible for functioning in the pre‐hospital setting as well as various capacities throughout the hospital. Education, License & Cert:
Paramedic Certification with PA DOH
High School Diploma or equivalent required. Will consider military experience in lieu of high school diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
Maintains current certification as an EMT‐P by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Recommended to maintain current certification in ACLS, and PALS. Must have CPR and EVOC certification with EMSVO endorsement on Paramedic certification. Must have current valid driver's license. Ability to read, write, understand oral communication and have verbal ability in giving presentations and teaching. Keeps neat and legible written records. Follows universal precautions. Utilizes proper body mechanics. Is able to make timely decisions. Is able to handle traumatic situations, such as the death of a patient, including children, and unpleasant sights.
Essential Functions:
Performs basic and advanced life support in accordance to the Pennsylvania Department of Health statewide basic/advanced life support protocols and completes all protocol update education.
Must be skilled in all aspects of medical emergencies and trauma associated with BLS/ALS Emergency Medical Services.
Supervises students when they provide patient care, treatment, and services as part of training.
Performs/demonstrates safe operation of emergency vehicle, including emergency driving.
Provides direction and assistance to ambulance personnel on scenes and acts as triage officer during times of disaster.
Performs Quality Improvement duties as assigned.
Pursuant to direct or standing orders from a Medical Command Physician, the Paramedic will be able to: administer medications and perform all required procedures in accordance with the PA DOH for basic and advanced life support.
Keeps informed of fire, safety, and disaster programs and attends designated in‐service programs.
Other Duties:
Performs other duties as assigned, reasonable related.

Provides basic and advanced life support and emergency pre-hospital care to persons in emergency situations. Essential Job Functions * Provides ALS or BLS patient care in accordance with the approved standing orders and protocols, department policies and on-line medical command. Is constantly mindful of the treatment modality that will be most appropriate for the patient's illness or injury.
* Acts as a patient advocate and practices good communication techniques to keep the patent and family informed regarding their care provision.
* Completes the appropriate ALS (Paramedic) or BLS (EMT) skills lab, CPR and continuing education credits as required to maintain medical command and/or certification. Completes all required hospital and departmental education and competencies in a timely manner.
* Operates department vehicles in a safe and lawful manner. Reports to supervisor all traffic violations and other infractions (both on and off the job). Maintains an accident-free record (on the job) during the evaluation period.
* Responds without delay to emergencies or in a timely manner to calls for assistance or transportation. Coordinates responses with EMS staff, hospital staff, patients and family, and outside agencies so that transportation and care are provided appropriately.
* Documents patient care on the ambulance trip sheet accurately and legibly in accordance with State and department policies. Collects and legibly documents all required paperwork such as information for patient billing or other record keeping purposes.
* Inspects assigned vehicle and equipment along with performing other station duties in a timely manner to insure that equipment and supplies are available and in working order so that proper patient care can be delivered. Reports missing or broken equipment to a supervisor as soon as possible.
* Washes and disinfects medical equipment and emergency medical vehicles in accordance with appropriate standards.
* Arranges the scheduling of ambulances and vans in a timely manner as requested and necessary.
* Reports and documents any concerns, issues or events which are undesired or which have the potential to escalate.
* Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
* High School Diploma, GED or higher level of education.
* Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, sound judgment, and knowledge of legal aspects and liability of nursing practice.
* Strong ability to communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience.

* One (1) to two (2) years ambulance service experience

* NIMS course completion.

**SUMMARY OF POSITION:**
An Advanced EMT (AEMT) functions as a care provider in the pre-hospital setting. They are responsible for all aspects of care provided to the sick and injured.
