Letchworth State Park company history timeline
The second cabin belonged to Mary Jemison, the White Woman of the Genesee, which was built in 1800 and originally stood on the Gardeau Flats by the Genesee River.
The first family was that of Reuben and Perry Jones in 1816, near the present day Park Visitors Center.
William Pryor Letchworth was born on May 26, 1823 to a Quaker family in Brownville, NY. He was raised to value hard work and developing his intelligence.
In 1859, he made his first land purchase along the Genesee above the Middle Falls.
When the Genesee River Company was established in 1898 and threatened the existence of the Glen Iris Estate.

Knowing that this would not protect it, Letchworth offered his estate and land to New York State as a public park in 1906.
Letchworth State Park was created by the stroke of the pen of New York State Governor Charles Evans Hughes in 1907.
Letchworth's death at his Glen Iris in 1910, the Park began its transition into being a State Park.
Formerly the country estate house of William Pryor Letchworth, the Glen Iris Inn has welcomed guests as a country inn since 1914.
When the Genesee State Park Commission took over in 1930, they planned many additional improvements to the young Park.
Constructed in 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), the 46-foot-long stone arch bridge stands 35 feet above the Genesee River, and serves as the only pedestrian crossing of the Genesee River in Letchworth State Park.
Letchworth donated one thousand acres that included the Glen Iris to the State of New York, by 1970 the park had grown to consist of over 14,000 acres.
The Humphrey Nature Center opened at Letchworth State Park in June 2016 and offers year-round environmental education opportunities for school groups, scouts, youth organizations, and the general public.
