The history of Longines watches began when it was founded by Auguste Agassiz and two other partners in Saint-Imier, Switzerland in 1832 as a comptoir under the name Raiguel Jeune & Cie.

1846

By 1846 Agassiz became head of the company.

1867

His travels to the US prompted him into opening the very first Longines factory, in 1867, in an area of Saint-Imier known as Les Longines or “the long meadows” which is where the brand adopted their name from.

The Longines factory, located in Saint-Imier – or, more precisely, in Es Longines (‘long meadows’) – is inaugurated in 1867 by Ernest Francillon. It wins an award at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1867.

It is based on the first movement for a wristwatch produced by Longines, in 1913: the 13.33Z calibre.

1927

In 1927 Longines was again at the forefront of new developments.

Used in conjunction with a sextant and a nautical almanac, the Lindbergh Hour Angle watch – based on the model Weems created in 1927 – helps aviators calculate longitude which, when combined with their latitude, gives them their exact geographical situation.

The back of this exceptional piece is adorned with a horse jumping an obstacle and its inspiration was drawn from a metal Lépine pocket watch dating from 1927 and kept at the Longines Museum in Saint-Imier (BE).

1933

Longines first became involved in timing ski competitions in 1933, in Chamonix.

In 1985 the brand was also named as the official timekeeper for all artistic and rhythmic gymnastics competitions organised by the International Federation of Gymnastics.

Elegance, Longines’s flagship value, inspired the creation of The Longines Elegant Collection, models launched in 2014 which perfectly represent the classicism and understatement inherent to the brand.

A new timekeeping and tracking system was launched by the brand in 2015 revolutionizing horse-racing technology.
