1850

The City of Los Angeles was incorporated on April 4, 1850.

1872

1872, April 15 - Jasper Babcock was appointed by the Board, as the Superintendent of Streets and Highways at a salary of $50 per month.

1873

1873, February 20 - The offices of the Street Superintendent were made appointive, under the direction of the Board of Public Works.

1910

1910 - The Bureau of Street Maintenance and Inspection was created.

1914

1914 In response to massive flooding of the LA basin, the Los Angeles Flood Control District is established to help provide flood protection as well as water conservation.

1916

1916 The Office of the County Engineer is opened and gradually grows to handle building and safety, land survey, and waterworks.

1928

1928, April 1 - Lot Cleaning Division was created.

1940

1940 The County Master Highway Plan is Developed to help guide the County's expanding road system.

1941

1941, January 24 - The activities of street maintenance were transferred to a new Bureau of Maintenance and Sanitation.

1947

1947, December 12 - The Board of Public Works abolished the Bureau of Maintenance and Sanitation and established the Bureau of Street Maintenance which consisted of Street Maintenance and Lot Cleaning Divisions.

1952

1952, April 16 - Street Use Inspection Division was transferred from the Bureau of Inspection to the Bureau of Street Maintenance.

1955

1955 - Street Tree Division becomes a part of the Bureau of Street Maintenance.

1960

1960 The Highway Safety Commission is established to engage the public in the investigation and implementation of traffic improvements throughout the County.

1967

The "Greenbook" was first published in 1967.

1973

1973 - The full-scale implementation of the slurry seal method of the resurfacing program.

1984

1984, February 29 - The first Call Management Sequencer was installed in the Bureau's Service Request Section.

In 1984, a companion to the Greenbook entitled the Standard Plans for Public Works Construction was adopted by the joint committee.

1985

1985 Thomas Tidemanson is named the Department of Public Works' first Director.

1987

The ECA Honors the Greenbook on It's 20th Anniversary (1987)

1991

1991 - The first Street Tree Inventory System was implemented in the Bureau's Street Tree and Parkway Maintenance Division, which manages an estimated 680,000 street trees.

1994

By 1994, it had become known as the "Greenbook"

1994 Harry W. Stone is named the Department of Public Works' second Director.

1995

In December 1995, the Joint Committee formally ceased operations.

In 1995, Public Works assumed the responsibility for capital projects from the County Internal Services Department.

1996

In January 1996, Public Works Standards, Inc., a mutual benefit corporation, began producing the Greenbook.

1997

1998

1998, February - The City Council passes an ordinance for the Street Damage Restoration Fee.

1998, July - The Bureau of Street Maintenance changes its name to the Bureau of Street Services.

1999

1999 Construction of the Iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall begins.

2001

2001 James A. Noyes is named the Department of Public Works' third Director.

2005

2005 Donald L. Wolfe is named the Department of Public Works' fourth Director.

2008

2008 Gail Farber is named the Department of Public Works' fifth Director.

2012

The County Board of Supervisors Adopts the 2012 Bicycle Master Plan.

2012 Construction begins on the County Hall of Justice Repair and Reuse project, overseen by the Department of Public Works.

2013

2013 The Road Department celebrates its 100th year of connecting communities on June 2, 2013.

2015

The County Flood Control District Centennial Celebration on August 12, 2015.

2017

2017 Mark Pestrella, P.E. appointed as the sixth director of Los Angeles County Public Works.

2018

2018 A new Los Angeles County Public Works logo is introduced.
