Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire a Maintenance Worker. Under immediate supervision of the Standard Sign Chief and the day-to-day guidance of the Highway Maintenance Lead Worker, the successful candidate will perform a variety of semiskilled tasks involving maintenance of the Highway Sign Shop facility, preparation and reclamation of sign base materials, packaging of materials for delivery, and storage of inventory items.
Essential Functions
Performs janitorial and grounds maintenance for the Sign Shop facility.
Performs preventative and functional maintenance on the Sign Shop facility and equipment.
Assists with removal of completed signs from drying racks, packaging of materials for shipment, placement of signs and materials into appropriate storage locations, and retrieval of stored items for sign manufacture and delivery preparation.
Sorts, classifies, resizes, straightens, strips, and stores salvageable sign materials.
Operates fairly complex and expensive machinery to remove sheeting from and apply sheeting to sign base materials.
Operates forklift and other material-handling equipment.
Performs other duties as required or assigned that are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires six months experience performing a variety of semiskilled manual tasks in the maintenance of highways, buildings, grounds, waterways or in a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
Prefers ability to operate power tools and equipment.
Prefers a working knowledge of sign standards and designs.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES:
ELECTRICAL: Troubleshoot three phase motors using an amp probe, volt meter or megar. Troubleshoot/repair manual or magnetic starters with momentary contact switch. Troubleshoot/replace limit switch and solenoid. Change rotation of equipment if needed. Check and replace breakers if determined to be faulty. Replace motors correctly according to nomenclature classification and discern which motor is appropriate for the area (i.e. explosion proof versus non-explosion proof).
PIPE FITTING: Do all phases of pipe fitting; including reading blue prints, cutting pipe, threading pipe, running pipe in a complicated configuration off of a print.
WELDING: Be able to demonstrate proficiency in several phases of welding, (e.g., shielded arc welding, tig welding, the ability to use a plasma cutter, and knowledge of Oxy-Acetylene cutting and welding.
PUMPS:. Fix and replace key elements of positive displacement or centrifugal pumps using any special tools.
BOILERS/COMPRESSORS: Have a high level of understanding of how a boiler works and a degree of understanding of compressors. Troubleshoot/repair/restart boilers.
MACHINES: Be able to demonstrate the ability to safely use several key pieces of equipment in a shop, (e.g., drill press, hydraulic press, power hacksaw, power cold saw, iron worker).
HAND TOOLS: Have a high level of knowledge of all hand tools required of a journeyman mechanic and to possess these tools as required.
HVAC: Have a working understanding of a HVAC system. May require a fundamental demonstration of troubleshooting abilities in the areas of differential pressures and how this effects efficiencies of a system.
SAFETY: Conduct all job assignments safely using the proper PPE, tools and techniques. Report any hazardous situations to Supervision.
RIGGING: Use safe rigging techniques of different pieces of equipment.
FABRICATION: Be able to take a basic print of a system and make modification or fabricate new parts to a system.
This position may require the management of hazardous waste, which may include, but is not limited to, making waste determinations, profiling waste with TSDF, labeling hazardous waste containers, container management (e.g. inspections), and release clean up/emergency response.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
The following knowledge and proficiency skills are required for this position to be acquired through a minimum of a High school diploma/GED.
Possess 5-7 years of industrial/manufacturing verifiable maintenance experience.
Additional education and training to support experience is a plus to include any certificates of safety training.
Have good communication and teamwork skills and the ability to interact/work with other departments.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND TASKS:
