1953

In 1953, Mel Lundberg, President of the Association was appointed to serve on the committee to study the school problem by Governor Charles Russell.

1955

The campaign was successful in obtaining voter approval by 1955 legislative action imposing a 2% state sales tax.

1961

Barrett resigned in 1961 to become Budget Director for Government Grant Sawyer.

1962

Ernest “Ernie” Newton was hired in 1962 as Executive Vice President and began a 20 year tenure with NTA.

1968

Goff says one day back in 1968, several TPA members were in a car driving over the old Barber Bridge when they focused on The Spires, a new condominium that rose well above every other building on the barrier island. “Building height restrictions became a major objective of the Association.

1977

the adoption of the first billion dollar budget (1977);

1978

Also opposed was the proposed Constitutional amendment which appeared on the 1978 November ballot – Nevada’s answer to California’s property tax relief measure.

1984

President of the Association in 1984-85, was Terry Goff, a longtime CPA in Vero Beach, who is still active in his firm and in the community.

1988

Upon the retirement of Nickson in 1988, Vilardo was made Executive Director.

1991

Also passed in 1991 was legislation to eliminate the spending of State surplus revenues for ongoing operational expenditures (a.k.a. “triggers”), and the creation of a State budget stabilization account (rainy-day fund).

1996

That legislation effective July 1996 save businesses in Nevada over $2 million dollars per year, and more importantly, eliminated the compliance and administrative problems associated with reporting consumable supplies.

Heran defined his concept of essential services in his April 2013 President’s Message for the TPA: “Broadly, in terms of local government, its function is to provide good order and stability.
