Mayland Community College company history timeline

1971

High Country Press: Mayland has progressed at an abundant pace from beginning its operations in a Board room at a bank in 1971 to moving to a sprawling main campus with several buildings and satellite campus buildings added in other locations.

Operations began in September 1971 in the Boardroom of the Northwestern Bank in Spruce Pine.

1972

In the fall of 1972, 102 students enrolled in four curriculum programs.

1973

In August 1973, the first graduation ceremonies were held, honoring 24 curriculum graduates and 40 GED recipients.

1977

The Institution occupied rented space in downtown Spruce Pine until January 3, 1977, when it moved to a location four miles from the town on its present site, containing fifty-seven acres.

1982

And part of the growth included the establishment of the Mayland Technical College Foundation in April 1982.

1986

In 1986, the school opened its Small Business Center.

1988

And the following year Mayland Technical College formally became Mayland Community College, effective January 1, 1988.

In 1988, the campus added the Learning Resources Center and Student Commons, a $1.7 million complex comprising 19,000 square feet.

1989

The following year (1989), Mayland Community College purchased the five-acre tract adjacent to the college campus.

1998

On April 9, 1998, 25 years since beginning the GED program, Mayland Community College surpassed its 4,000 GED recipients.

May 13, 2022 Justice has named High Country native Bret Bullis as the new warden of the Avery-Mitchell Correctional Institution, located in the far Southern end of Avery County in the Kalmia Community.
