MCC Construction history

By 1934, the College and high school enrollment had grown beyond the capacity of the building.

In 1952, Ed Morrissey originally founded Morrissey Construction Company in Illinois.

In April 1963, Muskegon County overwhelmingly approved the recommendations of the committee and elected the first Board of Trustees, which went to work immediately and by September had purchased the tract of land upon which the College exists today.

Alden B. Dow and Associates was named architect and by the summer 1965, drawings were completed and construction begun.

In the fall of 1966, he Vocational Technical Wing was completed and occupied.

McHenry County College was the 28th community college established in Illinois with the passage of a referendum on April 1, 1967.

The Frauenthal Fine Arts Center, which was completed in 1968, was the first addition to the campus.

An addition was built in 1980 for the multi-purpose room.

In 1982, approved by the State Council, Metallurgical Construction Corporation of China (MCC) was established, affiliated to the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry.

A referendum passed on November 8, 1988, allowed McHenry County College to continue to grow.

With the 1990 acquisition of 44 additional acres for the College campus, preliminary discussions with the Illinois Community College Board officials regarding a state-funded building began.

Construction completed in 1991, which now serves approximately 16,500 students annually, resulted in an addition of 96,000 square feet Conference Center, offices, dining facilities, Children's Learning Center, and bookstore.

In 1993, Tom Morrissey, Ed’s son, established a new office in San Diego (Oceanside), California, and renamed the company MCC. Although Tom remained a shareholder in the original Illinois company for several years, MCC was solely owned by Tom and worked independently from the Illinois company.

Recognizing that rapidly changing technology requires the workforce of the future to possess high skills and more education, McHenry County College, in Spring 1997, had completed the construction of a 44,000 square foot Center for Advanced Technology.

With more than 130 000 employees, Metallurgical Corporation of China Ltd. is considered one of the top 2000 largest public companies in the world, according to Forbes.

In 2003, Building A was expanded and now houses the majority of student services offices as well as the testing center, Sage Learning Center, human resources and the College's Sustainability Center.

In January 2006, the 40,000 square foot Hendrik Meijer Library Information Technology Center was added to offer the latest in communication capabilities, including wireless internet access, state-of-the-art library facilities/technologies and classrooms, and an internet café.

In March 2008, trustees voted unanimously to purchase 57 adjacent acres known as the Gilger property.

In June 2014, the Illinois Green Economy Network (IGEN) awarded MCC a $250,000 grant to go towards a 91 kW solar photovoltaic installation at MCC's Shah Center in McHenry.

In June 2015, local developer Jonathan Rooks donated the former Masonic Temple to MCC for its Entrepreneurial Studies program and related business-generating activities.

In December 2017, the Peter and Carolyn I. Sturrus Technology Center opened as the new home to MCC’s Applied Technology programs in CAD, Electronics/Automation, Engineering, Machining, Metal Casting, Materials, and Welding, as well as to MCC’s Experiential Learning Program.

The Rooks-Sarnicola Entrepreneur Institute opened in June 2018 and is home to the Lakeshore Fab Lab.
