This position is located in the Apparatus/Fleet Maintenance Division of the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department (DCFEMS). Our Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanics work under the general direction of the foreman and receive daily direction either orally or by shop repair order.
Duties and Responsibilities
Independently operates a Mobile Service Unit from the Fleet Management Division. Inspects equipment at fire stations to determine nature of trouble, make repairs or conduct equipment maintenance. If required, arranges to have the apparatus brought to the Fleet Management Division. Overhauls large multi-cylinder (12) diesel and gasoline engines, by disassembling and inspecting for defective parts, installing and adjusting main bearings, piston rings, pistons, connecting rods and bearings, wrist pins, checking cylinder walls for excessive wear or scoring, grinding, refacing and resurfacing valves; testing worn crank for out of roundness and taper; reassembling engine and making necessary adjustment. Bores worn or scored cylinders and installs dry or wet sleeves and finishes to proper size. Installs, maintains, and repairs mechanical features of electronic penetrators. Tests all electrical equipment, low and high voltage and control devices for shorts, open circuits, and grounds and make necessary repairs. Synchronizes dual generating, ignition, and carburetion systems. Troubleshoots, diagnoses, overhauls, overhauls, and repair diesel injection pump and nozzle.
Overhauls and adjusts steering, including tiller assemblies and brake systems (air and hydraulic). Replaces defective water, air, and vacuum tanks, and connecting related plumbing. Completely rewires vehicles after fire or accident damage. Tests performance of engines by performing road test, using a high degree of skill along with a complex motor analyzer and fuel injection testing equipment. Checks indicators and gauges to ensure proper functioning. Operates a small light-duty wrecker and large heavy-duty wrecker. Repairs aerial ladders and the related hydraulic raising mechanisms. Checks and adjusts relief valves; replaces and adjust cables; rebuilds hoists; replaces seals and rings, adjust controls; and replaces turntable fear shafts. Adjusts and lubricates tiller wheels, repair electrical attachments such as warning horn, spotlights, starter, and throttle. This involves performing extensive test to ascertain reliability and performance of ladders and related equipment. Repairs pumping engines and pump transmissions. Removes the pump, disassembles, inspects, and tests for defective parts. Replace or repairs worn or broken (e.g. bearing, fear, shafts, sealing rings). Reassembles pump and prepares for packing. Cuts packing in desired patterns and packs pump shaft. Adjust shifting gears, clean out by-pass and pressure regulator valves as necessary. Test and adjusts priming mechanisms. Runs in pump packing and checks pimps for air leaks during drafting operation.

What You'll Do:

Maintain records relating to maintenance. Document and report all activities in a centrally managed maintenance management system.
Maintain good working relationship with coworkers and military management personnel utilizing good judgment in recognizing scope of authority. Investigate and adjust customer complaints and concerns regarding fuel systems maintenance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Inspect, diagnose, and repair vehicle mechanical systems including suspension, steering, brakes, drivetrain, and cooling systems.
Perform precision wheel alignments and suspension work to restore proper vehicle handling and ride quality.
Use OEM and aftermarket diagnostic tools to identify and resolve electrical, mechanical, and electronic control system issues.
Collaborate with estimators and collision technicians to identify and verify all necessary mechanical repairs.
Perform pre- and post-scan diagnostics to identify hidden damage and confirm successful repair completion.
Document all diagnostic findings, repair steps, and calibration results in the repair order system.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of vehicle technologies, systems and repair procedures.
Ensure all repairs comply with safety, environmental, and quality standards.
Maintain tools, equipment, and work area in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
Assist other team members as needed to promote an efficient, team-focused workflow.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience
