Media Borough company history timeline

1814

Providence Friends Meeting on Providence Road in Media dates back to the late 17th century and the days of William Penn; the present main building was built in 1814.

1833

The Institute was established in adjacent Upper Providence Township in 1833 “to promote for the people of Delaware County, the study and diffusion of general knowledge.” A one-of-its-kind surviving national treasure, it houses a time-capsule museum of natural and area history.

1845

Things came to a head in 1845 when the old prison, which adjoined the courthouse in Chester, fell into disrepair.

1848

In 1848, the Delaware County Commissioners authorized the "Removal Act," which provided for the present site situated between Upper and Nether Providence.

1849

In 1849, the Black Building was the first building and store constructed on State Street and South Avenue.

1850

Minshall Painter, a descendent of Thomas Minshall, suggested "Media," a Latin word meaning “middle” or “equidistant from the extremes.” It was not until two years later that the State of Pennsylvania by Special Act of Assembly incorporated the Borough of Media, on March 11, 1850.

1851

The Media Courthouse, constructed in the neoclassical style, was completed in May of 1851 and the first court session held there on August 25, 1851.

1852

Historians have clearly established that many escaped slaves were assisted by local Quakers and were harbored by members of the existing African American community and Honeycomb UAME Church (founded 1852), just three miles west of Media along Barren Road in Lima, Middletown Township.

1855

In 1855, Haldeman’s Store at the northeast corner of State and Olive Streets sold groceries, dry goods, household goods and feed.

Also in 1855, a confectioner’s store, Bossard and Bowers, stood at 214 West State Street.

1856

The first school board in Media was organized in March of 1856.

The stagecoaches were used until the West Chester and Philadelphia railroad began operation in 1856.

1867

Delaware County Institute of Science on Veterans’ Square, a three story temple-like Greek Revival brick structure was built in 1867.

1870

Built prior to 1870 and first home in Media of Thomas V. Cooper, state Legislature and President of the Pennsylvania Senate, No 330A was later used as a office by Doctor Philip Jaison, famous Korean Patriot and founding father of Korean Independence from Japan.

In 1870, Gustave Kugler opened a hair cutting and shaving establishment.

1871

In 1871, the Ellis Pharmacy opened for business at the corner of Baltimore Avenue and Orange Street.

1872

Water was first supplied from what is now known as Broomall’s Lake; however, due to the town’s growth and demand, water was later supplied by Ridley Creek in 1872.

1877

On January 9, 1877, Borough Council named two regular police officers for the night hours.

Media Armory on State Street, a raised two-story Tudor Revival with flying Buttresses was built to house the Cooper Rifles, organized in 1877; it now houses the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Museum and Trader Joe’s.

In the year of 1889, the Media Fire & Protection Association was organized with George Darlington as its first president.

1890

Hillhurst on Orange Street was built in 1890 by John Biddle as a Queen Anne summer “cottage” on the western crest of Media Hill.

1891

On October 6, 1891, a charter was granted to form the Media Fire & Hook & Ladder Co. #1.

1893

Reorganization of the police department began on August 16, 1893, when James McKniff was appointed Chief of Police and Fire Marshall.

1896

On March 2, 1896, trolley car #32 of the Chester Traction Company made the first trip from Chester to Media with US mail from the Chester Post Office for delivery to the town’s residents.

1899

1900

6 May 19, 1900 Media's 50th Anniversary and history

Provident National Bank on State Street at Veterans’ Square was designed by Albert Dilks and constructed in 1900.

The beginning of the 1900’s saw a continuation of changes in Media.

As Media progressed in the 1900’s, street and road improvements accelerated, electrical uses increased, and telephones were acquired by both doctors and businesses.

1901

7 July 31, 1901 Media Library to open

The Media Library was founded in 1901 in a room on the second floor of the Borough Hall.

1904

1909

The Media Hospital, founded in 1909 by Doctor Schoff, had to turn away patients.

1913

Trolley service from 69th Street Terminal began in 1913 and train service increased.

1915

17 August 7, 1915 Media Broomalls Lake for bathing

In 1915, a new school was built at the corner of State and Monroe Streets, which served as the high school.

1917

The Arcadia Restaurant, opened by Nicholas Theodore in 1917, became the site of one of Media’s early morning coffee clubs.

1919

On the site of the stagecoach stop at State and Jackson Streets, a new post office building was erected in 1919.

1927

Built in 1927, it was designed by Louis Magziner as a Beaux-arts structure with Art Deco design elements.

1928

1934

1946

He settled in Media after service as a Medical Officer in three wars and was commended by Congress in 1946.

1951

In March of 1951, record producer Dave Miller of Media, PA persuaded Bill Haley (of nearby Boothwyn, PA) to add drums to his group, The Saddlemen, and record the Ike Turner / Jackie Brenston R&B hit “Rocket 88.” The release on Miller’s Holiday Label was Haley’s first Rock & Roll recording.
