Team Midwest company history timeline

1937

Ours is the story of two of these cooperatives: Southeastern Michigan Rural Electric Cooperative, and Fruit Belt Electric Cooperative, both born in 1937.

1938

On July 30, 1938, Fruit Belt energized lines to its first 133 customers.

Our name was initially Western Farm Bureau Electric Cooperative (renamed Midwest Electric, Inc., in 1938). The average residential Midwest Electric member used 47 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month in those early years.

1952

Then in 1952, LaVern Becker is elected to the Board; together, Becker and Goodman would lead CKEC to pursue growth and cost control.

1976

High school hockey teams from across the state came together in the fall of 1976 to organize the Iowa High School Hockey League.

1980

In the fall of 1980 the League was officially incorporated as a non-profit organization to be called the Iowa High School Hockey League, Inc.

1982

On February 23, 1982, the Waterloo Warriors and Columbus faced off at McElroy Auditorium in front of 3,800 high school hockey fans.

The cooperative launched its smart grid in 1982, featuring load control and the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.

1986

The first All-Star game was held January 21, 1986, at the North Iowa Recreational Center in Mason City.

1988

In 1988, with the vision of creating a quality service company, Ron created Midwest Contracting Ltd.

Although the culture has developed, the foundation of Midwest is the same as it was in 1988.

1997

Finally, in 1997, something beautiful happened: Fruit Belt Electric Cooperative and Southeastern Energy Cooperative (remember them?) held merger discussions.

2001

Midwest embarked on another expansion in 2001, when it outgrew the previous building it had been in for nine years, moving to a new 16,500 square foot office in Harvest Hills area, in northwest Calgary.

2003

Jed then forged a career in the National Hockey League when he joined the New York Rangers in 2003-04.

2010

In 2010, Ron had the vision to create a company that provided prefabricated steel stud systems to the western Canadian market, which became Fastwalls.

2014

Lancers hosted this rotating tournament in 2014.

Midwest Energy has 9,091 miles of electric line in service to 34,472 customers, at a price of 8 cents per kWh (13 cents in 2014, adjusted for inflation). The cooperative had 881 miles of gas pipeline in service, and 12,090 gas customers.

2016

Library of Congress blog post – Your Personal Archiving Project: Where Do You Start? https://blogs.loc.gov/thesignal/2016/05/how-to-begin-a-personal-archiving-project/

2017

28, 2017, rebranding one last time as Midwest Energy & Communications to reflect our new, expanded focus.

2020

Lancers captured the League’s second USA Hockey High School Division 2 National Championship in three seasons. (the tournament was cancelled in 2020 due to Covid-19.) Omaha advanced to the championship game after edging Dubuque 3-2 in the semifinals.
