Midwestern Regional Med Center history

In 1905, the Research School of Nursing was established as an adjunct to the hospital to meet increasing demands for highly skilled staff.

German Hospital was becoming known for its research and innovation, and in 1911, a completely new building with a 250-bed capacity was dedicated.

A research laboratory connected with the hospital was gaining wide recognition at the time, and so in 1918, German Hospital became Research Hospital.

The new hospital was reportedly completed at a cost of $1 million, which included $400,000 raised by a countywide bond issue in 1948, more than $200,000 received from the federal government and a countywide drive to collect funds from local residents.

Phelps Health’s rich historical background began in 1949 as a grassroots effort among residents in Rolla and the surrounding communities.

Phelps Health employs a staff of over 1,800, is licensed for 242 patient beds and is governed by a five-member elected board, like it was when it opened in 1951.

On August 11, 1963, the ultra-modern facility boasting 521 beds and state-of-the-art equipment and technology opened its doors to the community.

In 1985, Research Medical Center joined with HCA Healthcare to open the 100-bed Research Psychiatric Center as a joint venture.

The Downers Grove Campus was purchased in 1986, and the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine moved from its prior home in Hyde Park, Illinois, to this western suburb of Illinois.

The Glendale Campus was established in 1995 when the Board of Trustees approved the purchase of land and the building of a new campus in Arizona.

In 2003, HCA Healthcare purchased Research and 10 other area hospitals, and invested more than $100 million in capital for Research.

The Medical Office Building (MOB), which is adjacent to the north entrance of the medical center, was completed in 2007.
