Monticello Schools Pre-School company history timeline

1854

In 1854, Monticello residents built a six-room schoolhouse named Monticello Academy.

1909

The date that the Academy closed has been lost to history but, in 1909, Monticello High School was opened to serve white students in first through 11th grades across Hwy 150 from our current location.

1919

The scale of this growth is seen by 1,077 homes built in 1919 alone.

1920

Monticello Junior High was the last building built in the Heights Schools' rapid expansion of the 1920s.

1924

Brown Summit Colored High School was built in 1924-25 where Brown Summit Middle School now stands (4720 NC Hwy 150). It was a high school for black students that consolidated one-room schools in the community.

1970

As these schools absorbed the students previously served by the Monticello and Brown Summit high schools, the old high schools were converted in 1970 into an elementary feeder system to serve students in kindergarten through sixth grade.

1987

In 1987, the Guilford County School Board moved to consolidate feeder elementary schools like Brown Summit and Monticello into stand-alone elementary schools serving kindergarten through fifth grade.

1999

Hardee, C. (1999, December 17). Teachers, Students Say Goodbye to Brown Summit Elementary: Classes will begin at the new Monticello-Brown Summit Campus on Jan 4.

2015

Before it became M.A.G.I.C. programming, the Monticello High School implemented a first day of school for freshman only in 2015.

2017

M.A.G.I.C. programming went into place at Monticello High School and Monticello Middle School during the 2017-18 school year.

2018

Programming is expected to go into effect at Pinewood Elementary and Little Mountain Elementary during the 2018-19 school year.

2019

Programming will hopefully be implemented for staff at all five district buildings during the 2019-20 school year.
