1822

He is the son of Louis and Frances (Riberi) Vasaly, the former of whom was born in the northern part of Italy in 1822, and who, after graduating from college, studied pharmacy.

1854

His father, George H. Vernon, was also a native of Dane county, Wisconsin, born there on a farm in 1854.

1859

Vernon's mother was Clara (Herrick) Vernon, also a native of Dane county, Wisconsin, who was born in 1859.

1863

In 1863 Louis Vasaly came to America, afterward joining the Union army as a private, in New York he was connected with the first Italian newspaper published in this country.

1870

Ripley, but in 1870 moved to Little Falls, where he opened a drug store, which he operated for many years.

1871

Spirit J. Vasaly was born in Little Falls, Minnesota, October 30, 1871.

1875

Peter J. Vasaly is a native of Little Falls, born on April 1, 1875.

1876

His wife died at the age of thirty years in 1876, leaving six children, of whom John Vertin was the second child.

1878

Stephen C. Vasaly, who was educated in the public schools of Little Falls, attended a little old-fashioned red school house and afterward took a commercial course at St John's University at Collegeville, Stearns county, Minnesota, graduating from the institution in 1878.

Peter Viehauser was born in Stearns county, Minnesota, March 5, 1881, the son of John and Anna Viehauser, the former of whom was born in Illinois, where he was educated and where he lived until he came to Stearns county, Minnesota.

1894

After graduating from this school, he worked in Chicago until 1894 when he came back to Little Falls and opened a jewelry store.

1895

At fifteen years he took up the printing trade in the Herald printing office and later was employed by the Transcript until 1895, when in partnership with his two brothers, Stephen and Charles, he purchased the stock of the Herald Printing Company from John Sheets.

WM Morrison Supermarkets was founded in 1899 and is headquartered in Bradford, the United Kingdom.“

After serving for ten years in this capacity, and having in the meantime completed a night course in law, in 1900 he came to Little Falls and settled permanently.

1902

In 1902, however, he sold out the real estate business and was appointed cashier of the Merchant's State Bank of Little Falls.

1908

In about eight years she sold out to the Farmers' Co-operative Association and the firm name was changed to the Farmers' Co-operative Creamery Association in 1908.

1909

In 1909 he removed to Little Falls and has since practiced his profession in this city.

Archibald Herrick Vernon is a Republican in politics and was chief clerk of the House of Representatives of the Minnesota Legislature during the session of 1909.

On October 7, 1914, Peter Viehauser was married to Bertha Anderson, the daughter of Otto and Gustava (Rundquist) Anderson, both of whom were born in Sweden and who, after coming to America, settled east of Upsala, where they still live.

1937

Denton's first public library opened on June 6, 1937, in Denton County Courthouse.

1949

His son Ken Morrison took over the company in 1952, aged 21.

1961

The company opened its first supermarket, “Victoria”, in the Girlington district of Bradford in 1961.

1967

In 1967 it became a public limited company listed on the London Stock Exchange.

2004

John Lewis Partnership purchased 19 to be part of its Waitrose chain, while J Sainsbury plc purchased a further 14, and Tesco bought 10 in October 2004.

In 2004 Morrisons, which operated mainly in the north of England, acquired Safeway, a British supermarket chain which owned 479 stores, mainly in Scotland and the south of England.

2005

In September 2005 the company announced the closure of former Safeway depots in Kent, Bristol and Warrington with the loss of 2,500 jobs.

One of the largest single purchases in 2005 was that of five stores by Waitrose.

2006

On 18 July 2006, a further six stores from the ‘Rump’ format were sold to Waitrose, including the former Safeway store in Hexham, Northumberland, which became the most northerly Waitrose branch in England.

2008

On 13 March 2008 Sir Ken Morrison retired as Chairman after 55 years at the company and was made Honorary President.

2009

When the Co-operative Group completed its takeover of the Somerfield supermarket chain in March 2009, it was required to sell a number of stores by the Competition Commission.

2010

In 2010, Morrisons signed a deal with budget retailer Peacocks, the first concession store opened as part of a refurbishment at the retailer’s store in Idle, Bradford.

2012

Throughout December 2012 the supermarket chain saw a 2.5 per cent decline in sales.

2013

The Peacocks section was rolled out into other stores before launching its own childrenswear brand ‘Nutmeg’ into 85 stores on 21 March 2013.

2014

In June 2014, Morrisons announced that there are plans put in place to cut 2,600 jobs as a result of changes to its management structure.

Speculation is that Morrisons is investigating a launch into adult clothing during 2014.
