1976

From Guinea to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the world was dealing with the largest and most complex Ebola outbreaks since the virus was first discovered in 1976.

1987

In 1987, CEO Doctor Roy Vagelos announced our commitment to donate Mectizan – as much as needed for as long as needed – with the goal to help eliminate river blindness.

1988

VASOTEC (enalapril), an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor for treatment of high blood pressure and congestive heart failure, was approved by the FDA. VASOTEC became our first billion-dollar product in 1988.

1992

In 1992, MSD introduced the very first statin drug to reduce the level of "bad" LDL cholesterol.

1995

Prior to the FDA approval in 1995, in conjunction with the United States Food and Drug Administration, patients and HIV advocacy groups, MSD decided to offer the Crixivan Program.

1997

By 1997, MSD had surpassed most of these original goals.

In 1997, The Merck Manual of Medical Information–Home Edition was published.

1999

In 1999, the centennial edition (the 17th) of The Merck Manual was published and the first digital versions of The Manuals were made available for free online.

In 1999, MSD introduced its first biological treatment: a substance with anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor effects.

2004

The Merck Manual of Health & Aging, published in 2004, continued Merck's commitment to education in geriatric care, providing information on aging and older people’s health issues in words understandable by the public.

2005

In 2005, Merck voluntarily withdrew Vioxx.

2006

2006 expand_more Diabetes 2: Cured MSD has launched a breakthrough treatment for patients with type 2 diabetes on the basis of incretins.

2007

Peter N. Kellogg is the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer and has been since August 2007.

2009

The second significant merger was in 2009, when Merck announced it was entering into a US $41 billion deal with competitor Schering-Plough.

2011

The company also launched a free online health resource called Merck Engage in 2011, which enables patients around the world to take “steps towards better health”. These steps include help managing health conditions, healthy eating ideas and ways to better communicate with healthcare professionals.

2012

Financial results for the full-year 2012 reported that total worldwide sales decreased by 2% to US $47.3 billion, largely impacted by the loss of market exclusivity on Merck & Co’s asthma medication Singulair in the United States.

2013

As of May 6th 2013, Merck’s drug pipeline had 23 products in phase 2 clinical trials, 15 in phase 3 clinical trials and 6 under review for regulatory approval2.

2014

2016

2016 expand_more Immune-Oncology advances MSD has unveiled a new immunotherapy treatment that can be used to treat various cancers such as malignant melanoma, lung cancer, bladder cancer, and other cancers.

2017

2017 expand_more Prague BSC established MSD has established a European Shared Services Center in Prague to centralize and globalize finance and accounting services.

2019

Today, MSD employs approximately 71,000 people in over 140 countries (as of 2019) and is one of the world's leading research-based biopharmaceutical companies.

As of 2019, the effort has reached more than nine million women globally in 48 countries.
