National Programming Service history

Founded in 1893, University of California Press, Journals and Digital Publishing Division, disseminates scholarship of enduring value.

The Park History Program, begun in 1931, preserves and protects our nation’s cultural and natural resources by conducting research on national parks, national historic landmarks, park planning and special history studies, oral histories, and interpretive and management plans.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) by Executive Order on April 5, 1933.

During his college years, Bob spent six summers (1947-52) as a "historical aide" for the National Park Service at Custer Battlefield National Monument.

President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps within the Department of State by Executive Order on March 1, 1961.

President Lyndon B. Johnson created VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) as part of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 "to perform duties in furtherance of programs combating poverty at a State or local level."

National Volunteer Week was first established in April 1974 by Presidential Proclamation.

Bob took early retirement at age fifty in 1980 to focus his energies on writing books -- 23 in all, including Billy the Kid: A Short and Violent Life, Sitting Bull: The Life and Times of an American Patriot, Lone Star Justice: The First Century of the Texas Rangers, and Geronimo.

Glorieta Pass has been on the NHLAPs list of endangered landmarks since 1982, first because the only remaining building of significance from the period was abandoned and deteriorating, and later because of development on private lands within the boundary.

Listed as an endangered landmark since 1992, Corinth is threatened by development and inappropriate uses.

In September 1993, President Bill Clinton signs the National and Community Service Trust Act of 1993 "to establish a Corporation for National Service, enhance opportunities for national service, and provide national service educational awards to persons participating in such service."

In September 1994, President Clinton swears in the first class of AmeriCorps volunteers.

On June 18, 1997, Congress approves the Volunteer Protection Act of 1997 "to provide certain protections to volunteers, nonprofit organizations, and governmental entities in lawsuits based on the activities of volunteers."
