The Paralegal is responsible for providing critical support as an integral member of District Attorney prosecution teams.
COMPENSATION:
Anticipated Hiring Range: $30.00 - $43.00 USD Hourly

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Work with investigators, attorneys, and Victim Witness Specialists to prepare for criminal cases. Maintain subpoena return lists and investigator/attorney task lists.
Organize, index, analyze, edit, and produce large volumes of documents and media files, including body cam footage. Develop thorough knowledge of case files including transcripts, police reports, property, and evidence lists.
Responsible for discovery compliance and preparation of jury instructions.
Create databases, exhibits, and multi-media presentations for trial. Maintain confidentiality with sensitive and explicit material. Manage technology during trials.
Cross train on grand jury, economic crimes, extradition, and other specialty assignments. Provide support and backup for other paralegals on cases.

By the end of the internship, the interns will have produced legal research memos and briefs, strengthened their research and writing skills, and developed a stronger understanding of child welfare court system.
Academic Majors Desired: Law students currently enrolled in any North Carolina accredited law school.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:
Applicants should bring strong legal research and writing ability, a passion for child advocacy, and a desire to learn.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
* An applicant must be a permanent North Carolina resident attending a college, university, law school, community college or technical institute in North Carolina or a North Carolina resident attending an equivalent institution out of state.
* Applicants must carry a 2.5 or greater overall grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
* Applicant must be a high school graduate and at least 18 years old by January 1, 2026.
* Applicants must be continuing their education in the fall following their participation in the program.
* To qualify for a law internship, applicants must have completed at least one year of law school before the beginning of the internship, unless other majors are listed.
* Students having previously held paid internships with this program are not eligible to apply.
* Applicants must be willing and able to work full-time for the entire 10-week internship. Applicants must be able to provide legal proof of identity and work authorization within three working days of employment.

Major Task to be Performed: The successful candidate for this internship will assist the Legal Affairs Division with: responding to public records requests; reviewing and editing contracts; reviewing and editing leases, deeds, easements, and other real property documents; conducting legal research, including federal and state constitutional, statutory, case, and administrative code law; analyzing proposed state and federal legislation and regulations and their effects on agriculture, agribusiness, and the operations of the Department; assisting with civil and appellate litigation involving or of interest to the Department; attending and representing the Department at board and commission meetings and other events throughout North Carolina; assisting the North Carolina Forest Service and State Fair Police regarding criminal matters; and other duties as assigned by the Commissioner.
