The Correctional Sergeant Ill position is located at Bettie Correctional Institution in Windsor, North Carolina, which houses approximately 1504 medium or close custody male offenders. Work in this class involves first-line supervision to Correctional Officer Ill's in close-custody institutions with restrictive and controlled housing. Position assigns lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post. Employees oversee officer activities and performance and ensure that the custody, security and welfare of inmates is maintained. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Positions report directly to a Correctional Lieutenant Ill and/or the Correctional Housing Unit Manager. Ensures that staff is fully trained, and that proper conduct, actions and procedures are followed. Maintains facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance and health and safety of inmates. Gives direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies. May lead staff in carrying out tactical assignment(s). Responds to emergency situations, searches for escaped offenders, and transports offenders. Conducts and/or supervises searches of offenders, their living quarters, and work areas for contraband. Investigates and takes action, where appropriate, regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints. Prepares and reviews a variety of reports. Completes annual performance evaluations and assists in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline. Conducts staff briefing sessions. Performs other related duties as required. Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Dan River Prison Work Farm is a minimum-custody prison housing male offenders. This position reports to the Correctional Lieutenant I. This role will provide supervision of Correctional Officers, assist with planning work schedules, and assigned post. This individual will be responsible for Correctional Officer activities directly related to the custody and welfare of offenders in a state prison. Additional responsibilities of this position include the following:
* Assist and instruct officers in the performance of their duties and complete performance evaluations; disseminates and interprets to officers and offender's rules and regulations formulated by the department.
* Makes frequent tours of inspection to ascertain those officers are alert, that discipline is being maintained and that assignments are being carried out
* Supervise offender counts and maintenance of all records so that offenders may be always accounted for; supervises periodic search of offender quarters for contraband
* Conduct investigations, develop prisons operational, emergency plans and post orders.
* Work is performed according to standard departmental procedures and supplemental instructions are received through the established chain of command.
* Employee is subject to rotation to various duty assignments and performs other duties relative to the defined level of work described.
