This position is a 12 month position within Perquimans Juvenile Detention Center teaching core academic courses to small groups of students in grades 6-12. Teacher will be responsible for planning lessons based on the NC Standards and student's individual learning needs. Teacher will be responsible for ensuring success with all students while providing appropriate and engaging activities to teach concepts. Teacher will provide research-based strategies and interventions to provide an appropriate education for all students in a small group setting. Teacher will utilize data to inform all instructional activities based on NC Standards, implement IEPs, and be responsible for keeping all student records. This position serves as a member of the interdisciplinary team in order to plan for student services and treatment. Teacher will be responsible for keeping all student records, exceptional children's program and other paperwork, and student progress up to date.
The work unit is part of the Perquimans Juvenile Detention Center which operates under the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, Division of Juvenile Justice. This unit is dedicated to educating and rehabilitating youth within a secure residential facility. It focuses on delivering structured educational services to juveniles, many of whom have learning or developmental disabilities, with the broader goal of reducing and preventing juvenile delinquency. The team within this unit works collaboratively across disciplines to provide individualized educational and behavioral support, helping youth progress academically while addressing their social and developmental needs.

The salary for this position is based on the state teachers' salary schedule plus a 6% annual supplement.

This is a full-time position. Work hours for this position are Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4pm.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Each year, thousands of people from across the country and around the world visit Ephrata Cloister to experience the historic home of Pennsylvania's most prominent 18th-century religious community. This 28-acre National Historic Landmark features a modern visitor center, two cemeteries, and 11 historically significant buildings, dating to the 18th and early 19th-centuries.
As the Museum Educator 1 at Ephrata Cloister, you will play an integral part in the daily operation of the historic site. You will coordinate overall visitor services and the operation of the reception desk. You will also conduct daily guided tours, school programs, special programs, lectures (both in-person and virtual), and off-site educational outreach programs. The Museum Educator 1 handles the booking and scheduling of group and motorcoach tour reservations and assists with promotion of the same.
As the Museum Educator 1, you will assist the Museum Educator 2 and other site staff in developing, implementing, promoting, and evaluating Ephrata Cloister's educational and interpretive programs. You will help establish and maintain strong relationships with regional schools, fellow PHMC educators, craft people, and speakers. The Museum Educator 1 also assists in recruiting, training, scheduling, and evaluating volunteers.

11. Completes a daily health check for all children. Document observations during the daily health check and refer documentation to the appropriate Head Start/Early Head Start Content Area Manager and/or Specialist.
12. Observe children during mealtime and document any changes in the eating habits of children in your care. Provide documentation of changes in eating habits to the Health & Nutrition Specialist in accordance with CACFP policies and procedures.
13. Responsible for making classroom attractive and arranging functional learning centers.
14. Maintains records pertaining to classroom, including Point of Service BLS forms for the CACFP program.
15. Participates in staff development activities and educational opportunities for staff and parent. This will include, but not be limited to CDA training if the teacher does not have a CDA credential.
16. Arrives and leaves at designated time.
17. Uses resource people to expand and enhance the learning activities in the classroom.
18. Physically supervises children in the classroom, in hallways, cafeteria, and outdoors. Assists children in restrooms if needed.
19. Conducts Parent/Teacher conferences at least twice each year.
20. Provides sufficient time daily for children to play outdoors.

12. Observe children during mealtime and document any changes in the eating habits of children in your care. Provide documentation of changes in eating habits to the Health & Nutrition Specialist in accordance with CACFP policies and procedures.
13. Responsible for making classroom attractive and arranging functional learning centers.
14. Maintains records pertaining to classroom, including Point of Service BLS forms for the CACFP program.
15. Participates in staff development activities and educational opportunities for staff and parent. This will include, but not be limited to CDA training if the teacher does not have a CDA credential.
16. Arrives and leaves at designated time.
17. Uses resource people to expand and enhance the learning activities in the classroom.
18. Physically supervises children in the classroom, in hallways, cafeteria, and outdoors. Assists children in restrooms if needed.

Education and early childhood development
Ensures that the education environment is developmentally and linguistically appropriate, recognizing that children have individual rates of development as well as individual interests, temperaments, cultural backgrounds, and learning styles.
Ensures that the education environment supports the development of all children's social and emotional development, cognitive, language skills, and physical skills.
Implements a curriculum that recognizes the need for individualized activities, integrates the educational aspects of all program areas, helps to develop children's facility in social relationships, enhances each child's understanding of self, and provides for the development of cognitive skills.
Involves parents in the development of the program's curriculum and approach to child development and education, and participates in staff-parent conferences and home visits. Ensures parents have opportunities to observe their children and to share these assessments with staff to plan learning experiences.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED), EDU 119, or CDA Credential, and one to three months' related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Employee must pass an annual physical, TB screening, and submit to random drug screenings.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Incumbent must have a Child Care Credential II, & I (EDU 119), or a CDA Credential and maintain a valid state issued driver's license, and have current certification for CPR and First Aid.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Incumbent must demonstrate a working knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards, NC Day Care Regulations, and operation of a desktop computer, related software, printer, copier, fax, and phone, washer, dryer, and vacuum.
