It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Description of Work Work in this class involves managing an institutional housing unit within a medium-custody or closecustody institution. At both custody levels, employees work closely with programs and custody staff in the coordination of services. Employees are responsible for the programmatic/operational orientation of inmates which includes education, mental health, administrative and disciplinary restrictive housing and work assignments. At a medium-custody facility, positions function as the Correctional Housing Unit Manager. Employees exercise more overall accountability and responsibility for the housing unit and have final approving authority on unit classification and disciplinary committees. Employees supervise Correctional Housing Unit Manager I's and report to a Correctional Assistant Superintendent. At a close-custody institution, positions function as the Assistant Correctional Housing Unit Manager. Employees typically supervise Sergeants and report to a Correctional Associate Warden. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Reporting to the Correctional Associate Warden, this position manages the total operation of a close custody institutional housing unit within a minimum/medium/close custody prison facility. Job responsibilities include, but are not limited, to the following: * Supervising staff, determining and evaluating program design necessary to meet the needs of the offender population, and coordinating programs and services with program and custody staff. * Performing orientation with offenders which includes administration, disciplinary segregation, education, mental health, operations, programs, and work assignments. * Final approval of authority on unit classification and disciplinary committees. * Working in accordance with departmental regulations and established procedures. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits with established working hours of Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm and may require working beyond normal work schedule to meet business need. Note to Current State Employees: The salary grade for this position is NC08 Salary Range ($37,782 - $66,120). State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result. About Granville Correctional Institution: Granville Correctional Institution houses close custody offenders in both single cells and dormitories. The facility houses offenders assigned to various restrictive housing and control statuses and some pre-trial safekeepers. The prison's high-security unit houses the state's most violent and assaultive offenders. The prison offers a wide variety of educational and vocational programs and is home to one of the prison system's four schools for young offenders. Formerly known as Polk Correction Institution, the facility opened in 1997, replacing the former Polk Youth Institution on Blue Ridge Road in Raleigh, at the current site of the NC Museum of Art. Effective July 1, 2025, candidates now must meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the "Minimum Education and Experience" listed from the OSHR class specification as seen in the next section below.
