November 1, 1849 The Minnesota Territorial Legislature adopted a law which provided that each township containing 10 or more families could be divided into two or more school districts.
1849 Charles Perry purchased 89 acres at Lake Johanna, becoming the first settler in what was to become Mounds View Township.
August 15, 1851 First birth recorded in what was to become Mounds View Township: Damis Perry, daughter of Charles & Aurelia Perry.
May 11, 1858 Mounds View Township established.
March 10, 1883 Minnesota Transfer Railroad Company organized, which had connections with other railroads for receiving and handling of livestock, and which led to the development of the stockyards industry in New Brighton.
June 30, 1886 Saint Paul Union Stockyards was announced and financing arranged.
September 30, 1887 The first trainload of cattle arrived at the South St Paul stockyards.
October 22, 1889 Twin City Packing Company, the first packing company to do business at the New Brighton stockyards, began its operation.
January 20, 1891 Village of New Brighton was incorporated.
July 4, 1891 First of many 4th of July celebrations for New Brighton.
September 5, 1892 Congregational Church in New Brighton was founded and still exists today as United Church of Christ.
March 1, 1898 The new Village Hall had its first scheduled event, a dance, in its facilities.
November 12, 1900 Minneapolis Journal announces that the packing houses would close.
By autumn, 1925, a group of civic minded citizens concluded that formation of a fire district to serve the community could not be delayed further without consequences.
In the early months of 1926, plans were laid to purchase land for the building of Brighton’s first firehouse on the corner of Landing Road and East Avenue.
In 1927, the Brighton Fire District purchased a lot from the Buckland property facing Elmwood Avenue and siding on Winton Road.
Such interest led to the incorporation of a Ladies Auxiliary in June of 1929, and contributed to the further growth and development of the department.
October 12, 1929 First New Brighton Squash Show was held (this photo was taken many years later).
By forming its own training school behind Number 1 Firehouse in 1931, the department further sought to improve its proficiency.
In 1935, the Village purchased a fire siren and a truck with a pump.
In 1937, the capabilities of the New Brighton Village Fire Department improved so much, the Mounds View Township board voted to pay New Brighton for fire protection.
The first, was Harry Johnston, Jr., who was killed when a garage collapsed during a fire in the Home Acres Tract on July 22, 1940.
In 1940, another truck was purchased following community fundraisers.
August 28, 1941 Groundbreaking for arsenal by Federal Cartridge Corporation (TCOP) in Mounds View area of Mounds View Township.
As many as 150 firemen worked through the night including those of neighboring companies, the latter providing a splendid example of the County Mutual Aid System established in 1941.
September 19,1942 President Franklin Delano Roosevelt made a surprise visit to TCOP.
The Lake Johanna Fire Department Inc. was organized in July of 1943 by a few dedicated members residing in the New Brighton Road and Lake Johanna Blvd. area of then Mounds View Township.
In 1946 the Department mortgaged the new station to purchase a new (to the Department) fire truck.
In 1948, the Village of New Brighton adopted the by-laws of the newly organized New Brighton Fire Department.
June 1951 Voters determined that all nine elementary school districts in the area become consolidated into the Mounds View School District.
It was the largest single fire since the gas explosions in 1951.
February 13, 1952 Village of Arden Hills was incorporated.
On August 2, 1961 the department responded to a call at 1341 Westfall Road.
July 20, 1966 Village of New Brighton reached its 75th anniversary.
As a new decade broke in 1970, ten young men between the ages of 14 and 18 were welcomed by the Brighton Fire Department and together Explorer Post No.513 was formed.
Despite the advances between BFD’s founding and the 1970’s, destructive fires often started undetected and grew into large conflagrations before the alarm could be sounded, unfortunately many more than can be recounted here except for a few of the most memorable.
A “second-time” fire was fought at the Maplewood Inn on July 1 1,1973, one having extensively damaged the famed local landmark 15 years earlier.
Despite an almost immediate response, fire raged through the Twelve Corners shopping area, February 1, 1974, destroying Fox’s Delicatessen and four adjoining shops.
On April 4, 1974, Max Gonsenhauser again found one of his barns ablaze and soon the department was battling this fire hampered by gale force winds.
April 24, 1980 New Brighton Area Historical Society was founded.
July 4, 1981 New Brighton Stockyard Days activities began; first a joint effort between the New Brighton Area Historical Society and the New Brighton Jaycees, highlighted by steam engine #328 that provided rides for thousands of attendees.
July 4, 1983 Stockyard Days was incorporated and 12 New Brighton civic groups sponsored events.
In 1986 Station #3 was erected at its current location because of the increase of population in northern Shoreview and North Oaks.
January 1, 1987 New Brighton celebrates the Centennial of the town platting.
January 1, 1991 New Brighton celebrates the Centennial of its incorporation.
April 28, 2005 New Brighton Area Historical Society celebrates 25 years as an organization.
Station #3 and #4 are both owned by Shoreview and in 2005 both Stations had significant remolding to meet current service demands.
April 23, 2015 New Brighton Area Historical Society celebrates 35 years as an organization.
The next call to action, however, proved to be quite real as Doctor Paine’s barn on Penfield Road burst into flames and did a reported $10,000 ($135,000 in 2016’s dollars) worth of damage.
