North Iowa Community School company history timeline

1918

September 9, 1918 Mason City Junior College opens for classes at Mason City High School with 28 students under the direction of Principal James Rae.

1919

1919 The first MCJC athletic teams start with city basketball and baseball teams.

1920

1920 First five students graduated from MCJC.

1925

1925 After a 26-0 win over Wartburg College, MCJC is called the Trojans for the first time.

1929

1929 S.L. Rugland becomes new dean of Mason City Junior College.

1943

1943 College Dean S. L. Rugland serves his country as a Field Director with the American Red Cross in Europe.

1947

1947 Clifford Beem becomes dean.

1955

1955 MCJC moves from the high school building to the Memorial University Building.

1965

1965-66 In the last year as MCJC, enrollment is 1,390 students.

1966

MCJC is to become North Iowa Area Community College at the start of the 1966-67 school year and serve the nine counties in Merged Area II.

1970

1970 David Pierce becomes new president of NIACC in the same year the college begins to move to its current 300-acre site on the east edge of Mason City.

1973

1973 NIACC wrestling team wins national title under the direction of coach Kaye Young.

1977

1977 The Beem Center for Learning, named after Clifford Beem, opens.

1979

1979 Women’s basketball team goes to nationals.

1982

1982 The Administration Building, now named after David Pierce, opens.

1986

1986 Women’s volleyball team goes to nationals.

1991

1991 First student apartment added to NIACC Dormitories.

1993

1993 75th anniversary Homecoming float

1996

1996 NIACC becomes entrepreneurial resource with gift from John and Mary Pappajohn.

2002

2002 Soccer field created on campus.

2013

2013 Steve Schulz becomes president after Deb Derr takes top job at Mount Hood Community College in Oregon.

2018

2018 STEM Center opens.
