North Shore Door Company company history timeline

1836

In 1836, long before there was a single settler in Kewaunee County, a townsite was platted about where the City of Kewaunee now stands and large fortunes were made and lost by means of an eloquent lithograph.

1844

The county's first permanent white settlers were Increase and Mary Clafflin who established themselves in the Little Sturgeon Bay area, and then moved in 1844 to the area now known as Weborg Point in Peninsula State Park.

1849

Lots 1 and 2 were entered by Joel Carrington from Peshtigo in September, 1849, and the patents to lots 3 and 4 were issued to Wm.

1850

Discovering timber suitable for cordwood, Bailey informed his supervisor, and by 1850 nearly 2,500 cords of wood were being shipped out of Bailey's Harbor annually.

1851

In this he was successful and in 1851 he built a lighthouse under contract from the Government on the point at the east side of the bay.

1852

Baker and Turner came from Washington Island where they had settled as fishermen in 1852.

1854

Among them was John Thoreson, a Norwegian who settled at Little Sister Bay in 1854.

1857

At Rowleys Bay, Daniel H. Rice started to get out cedar about 1857.

When D. H. Rice settled there in 1857 he found a large cross planted near the path which led across the peninsula at this point and he reported that the Indians showed adoration for the cross.

In 1857 a new business man from outside parts saw possibilities in Baileys Harbor.

1861

When therefore Baileys Harbor in 1861 was set aside as a separate town it lost even the name of its former glory.

1865

In 1865 William R. Higgins and his son, Allen Higgins, built a pier a mile south of Baileys Harbor which for many years did a big business.

1869

In 1869 Kilgore built a long addition to his pier.

1870

In 1870 Sister Bay was opened up as a shipping point.

In 1870 the commission form of government was discontinued and each town had a representative on the board.

1871

He did a large business until he in 1871 sold out to F. Woldtman.

1872

The pier was built in 1872 and also a store.

1874

For instance, the assessment of Liberty Grove's real estate in 1874 was fixed by the county board at $92,709 against Brussels $42,390 and Sturgeon Bay (including the city) at $68,675.

1875

Prominent among the famous men of Egg Harbor is Doctor H. F. Eames who came to the town about 1875.

1876

By 1876 Schram and Schmidt had saved up a few dollars and were able to buy forty acres of land each on the north side of the township between Gibraltar and Baileys Harbor.

1877

In 1877 a few Swedish families organized a Baptist congregation which little by little grew until it supplanted all other interests in the community.

1880

When viewing this beautiful section of the county it is hard to believe that practically all of it was a timbered wilderness as late as 1880.

Pioneer Schoolhouse, 9998 Moravia St, EphraimBuilt in 1880, the Pioneer Schoolhouse was a one-room school that catered to grades 1-8.

1882

At Garrett Bay another pier for shipping timber, with its accompanying store were built in 1882 by Andrew Nelson, another Dane.

1885

About 1885 a man was found who solved this puzzle.

1886

The Sturgeon Bay Advocate as late as May 20, 1886, states that there were still some traces of the painting left at that time.

1890

In 1890 an ice company made up of Sturgeon Bay people started cutting ice there, employing about sixty men.

1908

For this reason the state authorities found it an easy matter to pick a Door County site for the establishment of a state park when they in 1908 visited a number of beautiful spots in the state.

1909

He died in 1909 while holding this office.

1913

8), in the spring of 1913, while making an excavation for a fountain, a pottery vessel was found.

1918

While some of the shipyards that provided these military vessels are gone, Bay Shipbuilding still operates out of the shipyard in Sturgeon Bay that dates back to 1918.

1964

While the festival started in 1964, the designs and ideas of the festival come from a tradition of early Norwegians celebrating Midsummer’s Eve.

1995

North Shore Window and Door started in the window and door business in 1995.

2008

In 2008, new owners bought it and resurrected it as an incubator for business growth on the island.

2017

Plum Island and Lighthouse, Plum Island, Death’s Door Passage, Lake MichiganPlum Island has officially opened for visitors in June 2017 after years of neglect.
