Northeastern State University company history timeline
In 1909 the state of Oklahoma bought the female seminary and established Northeastern State Normal School there to provide high school instruction and two years of college education. It became a four-year, degree-granting institution in 1919, when it was renamed Northeastern State Teachers College.
In 1920 enrollment exceeded one thousand for the first time.
In 1921, the name was changed to Northeastern State Teachers College as it had expanded to a full four-year curriculum.
In 1935 Public Works Administration funding financed the construction of the first permanent dormitories, named after Ann Florence Wilson, matron of the Cherokee Female Seminary, and Charles N. Haskell, first governor of Oklahoma Territory.
In 1939 the legislature renamed the school Northeastern State College.
The Northeastern State College of Optometry was established in 1979.
In 1979, NSU opened its College of Optometry, making it one of 14 schools in the United States to offer a doctorate degree in that field.

Among the championships and awards that NSU athletics have received are a division championship in men’s basketball in 2003, conference and national championships in football, a women’s basketball division championship, and two women’s conference championships in tennis.
The NSU RiverHawks (known as the Redmen until 2006) compete in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
