Paramedics provide out of hospital emergency medical care and transportation by ambulance for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical services (EMS) system. Paramedics use Advanced Life Support knowledge and skills necessary to stabilize and safely transport patients ranging from non-emergency and routine medical transports to life threatening emergencies. Job Responsibility 1.Responds to assignments as directed and updates unit status as required. 2.Assesses the patient's nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures in accordance with New York State Department of Health Guidelines. 3.Administers first aid treatment or Advanced Life Support care to sick or injured persons in prehospital settings. 4.Coordinates or interacts professionally with partners, patients, public safety personnel, colleagues, and hospital emergency staff to facilitate care delivery. 5.Communicates with dispatchers, medical control, or treatment center personnel to provide information about situation, to arrange reception of patients, or to receive instructions for further treatment. 6.Writes a comprehensive report documenting the situation at the scene, physical exam, orders received, treatments rendered, response to these treatments, and other information deemed pertinent. 7.Completes check of vehicle equipment and systems, and completes manifest at start of tour. Responsible for competent operation of all equipment and systems. Reports and relays needed repairs to supervisor. 8.Ensures the ambulance complies with 10 NYCRR 800 and Departmental policies. 9.Safeguards and maintains Department equipment and property. 10.Operates Department vehicles in accordance with New York State Vehicle and Traffic Laws and Department policies. 11.Attends training classes to maintain certification licensure, keep abreast of new developments in the field, or maintain existing knowledge. 12.Performing medical histories and physical exams as indicated on patients in the field. 13.Performs related duties as required. Emergency Medical Technicians provide out of hospital emergency medical care and transportation by ambulance for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical services (EMS) system. EMTs use Basic Life Support knowledge and skills necessary to stabilize and safely transport patients ranging from non-emergency and routine medical transports to life threatening emergencies. Assists the nursing staff in the performance of technical / laboratory duties exclusively in the Emergency Department. Job Responsibility Assists nursing staff in the preparation and treatment of patients in the Emergency Department. Assists Emergency Department staff and triage nurse with various procedures including bleeding control, orthopedics (i.e. crutch set and splinting), suturing, CPR and supplemental oxygen administration (as trained). Assists with various laboratory functions including transporting patients and specimens to appropriate areas and utilizing and maintaining the ABG/ Glucose analyzer (as trained). Transports telemetry patients to inpatient units. Assists Inventory Clerks and Transporters in checking, ordering and/or stocking supplies, testing equipment as well as cleansing and processing used equipment for Central Sterile department. Documents all procedures performed in the medical record and signs/titles appropriately ensuring all charts are countersigned by a Registered Nurse. Performs related duties as required.
