    SUMMARY: This is general police work which involves the active involvement of Officers working with the community to identify potential problems and solutions to improve the quality of life in our community. Police work also involves the enforcement of all (i.e. Tribal and Federal) applicable ordinances, statutes, and laws for the Omaha Reservation. This may include Crime Prevention, investigation and detection, protection of life and property, traffic control and maintaining law and order in the community. Officers will be dealing with all age groups from juveniles to adults. Officers will also be dealing with all levels of the Criminal element. This work always has the potential for personal danger. Officers receive direction from the Chief of Police and carry our those assignments in accordance with established operating procedures, but at all times an officer must be able to act without direct supervision. ESSENTIAL DUTIES and/or RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: Exercise authority consistent with the obligation imposed by the oath of office. Patrol assigned areas on the Omaha Reservation to enforce laws, investigate crimes, and arrest violators. Shall promptly obey all legitimate orders. Drives vehicles though assigned areas, observing and investigates disturbances, such as unlawful intrusions, fines and property damage. Patrols designed areas of the reservation on foot, motorcycles, bicycles, horse, or car to serve and protect the public. Apprehends unauthorized persons found on property, using force if necessary, and releasing them to custody of authorities at facility. Writes case reports and keeps a daily log. Assumes control at accidents to maintain traffic flow, assist accidents and victims. And investigates causes of accidents; in extreme emergencies transport accident victims to local hospitals. Protects property of the Tribe, local business establishments by detecting vandalism, thievery, shoplifting, or dishonesty among employees or patrons. Conducts on own initiative or on request of management. Contacts supervisor by radio or telephone to report irregularities and obtain further instructions. Responds to back up on crimes in progress and helps secure the safety of Officers in danger. Conducts interviews to learn nature of citizen's complaints, to gain information leading to the location of missing persons, to obtain all pertinent date related to emergency or criminal situations or criminal offenses. In criminal cases Officers conducts interrogations to determine probable cause. Identify suspects and obtain information necessary to make arrests. Conducts preliminary investigations at scenes of crimes to include keeping onlookers at a safe distance, isolating and securing the crime scene, and locating, collecting, labeling and safeguarding evidence. Obtains necessary evidence while interacting with suspects, victims, complainants and witnesses concerning crimes. Ordinarily the hours of duty will be established by the supervisor, however, they shall be subject to return to duty at any time in case of special needs to emergencies. Shall respond punctually to all of their assigned patrol district for protection of life and property; prevention and suppression of criminal activity and disturbances; recover and return of stolen and/or lost property; apprehension and assistance in the prosecution of offenders; prevention of accidents and the regulation of traffic and preservation of peace. Files complaints against suspects and testifies in court as witness. Appears in court to present evidence and testify against person's accused of crimes. Locates and takes persons into custody on arrest warrants. Serves subpoenas and summons; keeps records of dispositions. Enforces curfew for juveniles. Operates radar to identify speeding vehicles. Administers roadside sobriety tests, arrests intoxicated drivers, and completes chemical analysis requests in Driving Under the Influence (DUI) cases. Arrests persons suspected of crimes. Handcuffs suspects or prisoners by prescribed methods and means. Provides accurate, complete and factual information to persons involved in arrests including advising then of their rights, duties, and privileges. Completes written reports such as activity logs, daily reports, and arrest reports, and files them or forwards them to appropriate divisions or external agencies; completes reports on crime against person, property, or of a criminal intelligence nature. Determines probable cause to arrest or search. Prepares affidavits and serves authorized warrants. Establishes Police lines at fire and crime scenes, institutes vehicular and crowd control procedures, allowing only authorized persons to pass through barricades. Directs and controls traffic to facilitate vehicle and pedestrian flow and to prevent accidents. Participates in the dispersal of unruly gatherings. Stands inspection inspects equipment and services personal firearms. Interacts formally with schools, community groups, participates in departmental community relations programs, Drug Awareness Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) and helps citizens from neighborhood watch groups. Provides assistance to person who may be lost, stranded, or otherwise in need of assistance. Must be able to work varying shifts, weekends, and holidays.
