Gordon Gould, in full Richard Gordon Gould, (born July 17, 1920, New York, N.Y., United States—died Sept.
Gould left Columbia and joined the defense research firm Technical Research Group (TRG) in 1958 to work on building a laser.
After many years of litigation, he prevailed, and in 1977 he was issued the first of the four United States basic laser patents that he was eventually granted.
The laser industry then fought the award of patents to Gould to avoid paying him millions of dollars in royalties, but he finally prevailed in 1987.
