OC Animal Allies began in 1984 as a small group of dedicated animal lovers in Orange County coming together to form an organization dedicated to helping Orange County residents and animals.
The original building, erected in 1986, was not constructed to serve as an adoption center but as a temporary holding area for dogs in the custody of animal control.
It opened as a 33,000-square-foot building but was expanded by 9,000 square feet in 1993.
In 2016, after a flurry of complaints labeled the shelter as an uncomfortable place for both people and pets, county leaders opted to pay $300,000 for ventilation upgrades to cool the air inside the building by as much as 10 degrees inside the kennels for stray, lost and abandoned dogs.
In 2019, the organization changed its name to OC Animal Allies to reflect its unique position in the animal welfare space and to more accurately convey its mission and vision.
