Outdoor World Corporation company history timeline

1988

In 1988, the Ahnerts and Lee had sold Outdoor World for $200 million to the Rank Organisation, a London-based entertainment conglomerate.

In 1988 Bass Pro Shops opened Big Cedar Lodge Resort located by Table Rock Lake in the Ozark Mountains.

1989

Robert Curry knew none of the company's history when in spring 1989 he plucked from his mailbox a letter that would confound him for more than two years.

Perhaps the longest legal challenge to Outdoor World came in the form of 1989 class-action complaint filed by Maryland's attorney general's office.

1990

In 1990, a corporate office and warehouse/distribution center was opened in a mid-Santa Cruz county location.

1991

Curry beat them to it by filing a lawsuit in federal court in Philadelphia in December 1991 alleging fraud and violation of consumer trade practices.

1992

In 1992, they filed their own class-action suit in Dauphin County court in Harrisburg, seeking refunds of their contracts and damages from Outdoor World.

In 1992 Brunswick Corporation paid $25 million for a minority interest in Tracker Marine and thereby became the exclusive provider of engines, trolling motors, and other equipment for Tracker boats.

1993

Ultimately, they wrote to the attorney general's office and joined hundreds of other members released from their contracts as part of the state's 1993 settlement.

In 1993 Morris sold a minority stake in Bass Pro Shops to Gaylord Entertainment Company for $60 million.

He bolstered its appeal by opening a nearby Wildlife Museum in 1993.

1995

The company's last public settlement occurred in March 1995 -- a $2.6 million agreement that ended a six-year legal battle with the Maryland attorney general's office.

1997

The second true Outdoor World megastore, a 125,000-square-foot mall anchor, opened in the fall of 1997 outside of Chicago in Gurnee, Illinois.

1998

1998: Tracker Marine begins to sell RV vehicles.

To facilitate this new structure efficiently a Point-of-Sale/Inventory Control computer system is installed and the internet web store launches a few years later in 1998.

1999

In 1999 an Outdoor World opened in the Dallas/Ft.

Late in 1999 Bass Pro Shops decided to sell the land across from its Duluth, Georgia, Sportsman's Warehouse, electing to build a new and larger Outdoor World as part of a Mills mall under development in the area.

2000

In 2000 it signed an agreement with Bluegreen Corp., which planned to build a timeshare resort adjacent to Big Cedar Lodge, amounting to some 300 vacation homes.
