Pacific Health Research Institute company history timeline

1957

The roots of Pacific Research Institute (PRI) go back to 1957, when Sir Antony Fisher founded the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) in London to spread the influence of leading free-market thinkers such as F.A. Hayek and Milton Friedman, both of whom became Nobel laureates.

1960

In 1960 a group of physicians from Honolulu’s Straub Clinic and other civic leaders established the first organization in Hawaii dedicated to medical research.

1974

In 1974, the Board of Directors decided to rename SMRI. The new title, Pacific Health Research Institute, was believed to better reflect the organization’s growth in stature and widening research focus.

Also in 1974, PHRI, in collaboration with the Queen’s Medical Center, won funding for the “Aspirin Myocardial Infarction Study,” an important investigation into the propensity of small doses of aspirin to prevent heart attacks.

1979

In 1979, Sir Antony teamed with San Francisco businessman James North to establish the Pacific Research Institute.

2020

2020 - Encounter Books publishes False Premise, False Promise: The Disastrous Reality of Medicare for All by Sally C. Pipes, which becomes a Number 1 Amazon.com bestseller for health law books.
