In 1821, almost 100 years later, the first pharmacy school, Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, opened.

Shortly after, in 1852, the first national pharmacy association, the American Pharmaceutical Association (APhA), was established.

In 1879, Roby & Calloway opened the first drug store in Calico Rock, Arkansas.

By 1900, the industrial revolution introduced new forms of medications, such as tablets, gelatin capsules, and enteric-coated pills.

In 1989, Andy Stergachis, current Associate Dean in the School of Pharmacy, was recruited from Group Health’s Center for Health Studies by then-Dean Milo Gibaldi to join the then-Department of Pharmacy Practice.

By 1995, the team had attracted additional top scholars and built enough support and funding that the time was right to secure an official Program designation at the UW as well as establish a new graduate program.

By 1997, the first class of Ph.D. students began.

By 2003, the Medicare Prescription Drug Improvement and Modernization gave pharmacists the ability to, once again, counsel patients on prescription drugs as well as OTC medications.
