Phi Sigma Pi company history timeline

1921

The fraternity became national in 1921 when a second chapter was founded at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois.

1940

In 1940, the Purple and Gold Newsletter was established to maintain contact between collegiate chapters and the national office

1949

The fraternity incorporated in 1949

1966

The fraternity then evolved from an honorary professional fraternity to a professional education fraternity, and, in 1966, to an honor fraternity for all disciplines.

1969

In 1969 fraternity member Clifton R. Wharton, Jr., became the first black American president of a major university when he was selected to lead Michigan State University.

1977

In accordance with Title Nine guidelines, Phi Sigma Pi became coeducational in 1977 which allowed women to also join as members of this fraternity.

1980

In 1980 the fraternity chartered the Boulé Foundation, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit private foundation that is supported by voluntary contributions from its individual members and their wives.

1984

In 1984, the Fraternity again changed its name.

1994

Our Beta Nu Chapter was founded March 6, 1994, as a member of the Northeast Region

2008

During a visit to National Headquarters in October 2008, Matt and Katie Peachey, two alumni from the Beta Psi Chapter at Middle Tennessee State University, spoke with Matt Parido, the Director of Expansion, about reactiviating the Epsilon Chapter at Vanderbilt after being inactive for over 75 years.

2009

After a semester of work and study, 71 new brothers were inducted on April 19, 2009.

2010

Awarded Best in Region for the Northeast Region (2010)

2011

On April 17, 2011, Phi Sigma Pi inducted the Charter Class of the Zeta Iota Chapter at St Joseph’s University.

2012

Awarded Best in Region for the Northeast Region (2012)

2013

Awarded Best in Region for the Northeast Region (tied with Syracuse University) (2013)

2014

On May 17, 2014, the last of our Charter class graduated from St Joseph’s — our first set of Brothers to spend all four years as members of Phi Sigma Pi.

2020

In 2020, fraternity member Michael V. Drake was named president of the 10-campus University of California system having previously served as president of the Ohio State University and Chancellor of the University of California, Irvine.
