Job Description The Laboratory Assistant / Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting, processing, and preparing patient specimens for testing in a medical clinic environment. Summary of Essential Functions Performs veni-punctures on all patient populations. Organizes workload efficiently and without delay. Practices safety and infection control procedures according to laboratory and hospital policies to assure a safe environment for patients, visitors, medical staff, and lab personnel. Performs all duties associated with LIS in an accurate and timely manner. Performs basic laboratory tests at patient's bedside. Processes paperwork and specimens for send out reference lab testing and drug screens. Demonstrates competency in assessing patients' needs at bedside. Educational Requirements High School Diploma or equivalent. Minimum of four months experience which may be obtained through any of the following: High School and/or Vocational School; and/or Technical School; and/or essential experience; and/or On-The-Job training. Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Licenses and Certifications Phlebotomy certification preferred or a minimum of 1year work experience. Must have current class “C” driver's license (State of Texas) and be capable of driving a manual transmission vehicle. Physical Requirements Requires standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 35 pounds, and driving during the entire shift. Must be able to handle all types of biological and physical specimens using proper blood and body fluid precautions. Duties and Responsibilities Organizes workload efficiently and without delay. Identifies patients and labels specimens accurately according to established procedures. Blood Banking errors must be evaluated case by case for severity of the error, and in some cases no errors will be tolerated. Consistently collects the proper specimens for tests to be performed. Writes date, time, and initials on labels and requisitions. Consistently completes routine blood sample tests within 5-8 minutes, difficult cases within 15 minutes. Maintains URL collection logs at assigned facilities. Interacts and collects specimens in multiple settings e.g. URPG offices, hospitals, nursing homes, businesses, physician offices, schools, and patient homes. Performs driving duties, obeys traffic laws, and maintains the care and fueling of company vehicles. Performs audits of requisitions, monitors test orders at facilities, and insures accuracy of patient demographics, insurances, and ICD-10 codes for entering into the LIS. Assists clients with training in the LIS and familiarization with data entry protocols. Assists clients with training in specimen collection protocols and laboratory regulations on specimen labeling, time critical tests, specimen temperature, and specimen transport requirements. Practices safety and infection control protocol according to lab and hospital policies to insure a safe environment for patients, visitors, medical staff, and lab personnel. Handles contaminated materials according to infection control guidelines; reports accidents, incidents, and/or unsafe conditions to supervisor; completes incident report within 24 hours. Disposes of contaminated needles in a puncture proof container. Never recap or cut needles. Sorts chart reports for mail as needed. Handles information requests on specimen/test results. Assists with daily functions of secretary, courier, maintaining supplies, training new employees, and other needs. Performs phlebotomy duty after normal business hours and overnight, weekends, and holidays. Performs all other tasks/responsibilities as necessary.

Department: Lab-Administration Shift: Third Shift (United States of America) Standard Weekly Hours: 36 The Laboratory Phlebotomist performs positive patient identification and collection of various laboratory specimens on inpatients and outpatients, as needed. Receives specimens into the lab reception area, inputs specimen information into the laboratory information system and requests patient registration as necessary. Phlebotomists maintain specimen integrity during specimen collection, transport, and processing of samples received in the laboratory. Communicates specimen issues to caregivers. Provides customer service by greeting visitors, answering the telephone, transferring phone calls, faxing results, and assisting with specimen requirements. Performs other clerical or clinical duties as required by area of service. Patients served at Cook Childrens range in age from newborn through the adolescent period. Every effort will be made to collect specimens in the least traumatic manner to both child and family, to include attention to age appropriate child life issues and pain management techniques. Additionally, adults are occasionally served. Specific instructions appear in the procedure manuals.
