As a Phlebotomist, you will be responsible for obtaining quality blood samples using a variety of phlebotomy methods for all age groups. Methods may include venous, capillary, arterial, and line collections. Not all locations use all methods. You will provide rapid response to medical emergencies such as traumas and codes.
Working as a Phlebotomist at Mayo Clinic, you will be working both independently and as a team, actively partnering with team members by fostering an inclusive work environment, and respecting others with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. You will interact with patients, nurses, providers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction. A variety of computer programs and systems will be used throughout your daily routine. Additional responsibilities of this role include accurate patient identification, quality specimen labeling, handling, and transportation, answering phones, assisting with the training of students and new employees..
*Individuals hired to this position are required to complete 2 years in this position before becoming eligible to transfer to other positions within Mayo Clinic.

Qualifications
You must have a high school diploma or equivalent to be considered for this position.

Community Laboratory Medicine & Pathology (CLMP) employees that have been in their current lab/position for less than 2 years must attach an early release approval from their supervisor.
Internal applicants must attach their 3 most recent performance appraisals.
Willingness to travel to other MCHS locations for assignments as needed.
Phlebotomy experience, preferred.
Experience working in a medical field, preferred.
Must be able to push a cart and walk distances.
Moderate to advanced computer skills.
Possess good written and oral communication skills, the ability to prioritize work, manage time wisely, and adjust to changes in work volumes and projects.
Excellent customer service skills.
License or Certification
To qualify for Phlebotomist II, the applicant must possess a valid phlebotomy certification from an approved laboratory certification agency, such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), National Health Career Association (NHA), or the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT).
Certificates from a technical college where the course was taken are not sufficient. The Phlebotomist must have sat for a certification exam from an agency such as those listed above or must possess one of the following valid certifications: Medical Assistant (MA) certification from an approved agency such as the American Medical Association (AMA), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Medical Technologist (MT) certification.

Position Summary
Under direct supervision by department leadership, performs phlebotomy collection of whole blood and apheresis products. Responsibilities
Prepares collection site and performs set up, including technology systems (may include quality control).
Performs donor screening (collects donor histories), mini-physical, and phlebotomy.
Observes donors for reactions, provides reaction care and assists other staff in handling reactions if needed. May provide post-reaction care at mobile drives including assessing reactions for recovery, escorting donors and serving as liaison to coordinate care with host organization (e.g. high school nurse, drive coordinator.
Conducts automation (Alyx and/or Trima), including recognizing and responding to automation reactions. Recruits and converts donors for automation.
Rebooks donors for future donation appointments.
Understands and performs to all applicable regulatory and compliance requirements.
Recognizes when the customer is distressed and responds appropriately with tact. Creates a safe environment for donors and staff members.
Treats donors with customer service excellence, presenting a positive image. Responds to customer inquiries, requests and complaints with a timely and complete response and escalates to leader when appropriate.
May prepare and pack units for transport.
Maintains product integrity and ensures proper identification of all donors, performs routine maintenance on equipment, and completes department records as needed.
May be eligible for additional "Skill" based pay (Driving, Language, etc), based on employee qualifications and business need. Requires evening, weekend and holiday work hours, and travel to other local collection sites as determined by business need.

* Ability to accurately maintain sample and report identity using patient name and identification number through sample receipt, processing and reporting. Ability to maintain accurate and complete records and maintains strict confidentiality with regards to patient information. Ability to effectively greet the public; work well with patients and Hospital employees; communicate effectively with all kinds of people. Ability to follow directions and perform tasks outlined in procedure. Ability to exercise judgment and take responsibility to maintain patient health and safety during specimen collection. Ability to organize work and meet deadlines.
