The person in this position maintains a safe and professional environment for patients, clients, and employees and provides administrative and training support to the supervisors. The person in this position functions as the backup to the area supervisor. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Ready to travel to a client location within a designated region with short notice. Assist supervisors with the implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) for phlebotomy services in accordance with PathGroup guidelines. Function as back up for the Phlebotomist Supervisor as necessary and carry out duties in his/her absence. Coordinate the work of phlebotomist in the Patient Service Centers and In-office Phlebotomy (IOPs) to assure that production is consistent and service levels are maintained. Play an important role in the dissemination of information to employees. Responsible for training, coaching, and providing input on the performance evaluation of the phlebotomists. Assist in relocating, opening new facilities as necessary. Perform site visits as assigned, and document findings. Assist with QA (quality assurance) audits. Greet customers appropriately. Treat all customers in a courteous manner. Ensures all field phlebotomy and PSC specimens are collected accurately and on time. Collects specimens according to established procedures. Properly explains in a clear but courteous manner the process of the venipuncture (blood drawing) and or other specimen collection (ex. urine or fecal) as required. Reduces patient anxiety by providing a calm environment for patients before, during and after the collection process. Disposes of blood or other biohazard fluids or tissue, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, or policies. Disposes of contaminated sharps, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, and policies. Completes requisitions accurately. Enters patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into computer. Requires attention to detail to maintain high level of accuracy. Communicate with clients to confirm handwritten orders, verify test(s) ordered, obtain accurate billing information, i.e. diagnosis codes, UPIN information, etc. Researches test/client information utilizing lab computer system. Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order. Package specimens for transport. Stores specimen sample according to required temperature, places samples in appropriate collection container/ tube, accurately labels, follows different procedures as outlined by specific to protocol deemed necessary for transport to maintain integrity of the specimen. Demonstrates proficiency of proper collection methods and proper processing of all specimens. Maintains required records and documentation. Prepares schedules with minimal overtime for employees and floaters to be submitted to the supervisor for approval. Assist with time/attendance entry of employees. Maintains daily records and all appropriate PSC/IOP Phlebotomy logs. Assist with compilation of monthly statistics and data. Performs basic clerical duties, i.e. filing, faxing, and preparing mail. The person in this position is required to perform electronic data entry. Approves time in attendance software by noon on the Monday following the end of the pay period. Submits accurate expense and travel logs Monday for the week prior or as directed by management. Demonstrates organizational commitment. Perform venipuncture and skin punctures competently and expediently in the Outpatient and Inpatient setting. Has thorough knowledge of test requirements and assists in Clinical Laboratory as needed. Demonstrates competence in all procedures required of a phlebotomist in accordance with institutional policies; with particular emphasis on blood samples, blood cultures, referral tests and specimen requirements. Always verifies and collects proper samples required for specific tests. Always initials, dates and records time blood, urine or culture collected on all laboratory requisition forms. Always accurately labels specimens (patient's name, medical record number, initials date and time collected). Maintains awareness of timed specimen's collection and their importance and attempts to collect these specimens at appropriate time. Properly instructs out-patients of all ages, in the correct way to collect urine specimens. Consistently draws blood properly using established laboratory procedures (i.e., proper patient identification, proper tube selection, etc.). Correctly processes all lab requisitions, forms, and specimens for routine and reference tests. Shares appropriate communication with other laboratory personnel involving difficult Venipuncture, timed specimens, etc. Accepts responsibility for and becomes available to work a different shift when workload and / or other conditions warrant. Utilizes supplies equipment in a non-wasteful manner. Can perform all tasks assigned to the Phlebotomist. Consistently determines proper priorities when organizing daily tasks and is able to adjust schedule in view of STAT's, out-patients and time draws. Consistently completes routine blood draws within 10 minutes. Consistently completes duties neatly, accurately and in a timely manner. Performs all procedures in a professional manner. Knows what tubes are required for various tests, what handling is necessary for each and how to find out when it is not known. Other duties as assigned. Technical, critical thinking and interpersonal skills relevant to area in order to effectively communicate with physicians, health team members, and patients and their families. Department: Research Operations Shift: First Shift (United States of America) Standard Weekly Hours: 40 The Laboratory Phlebotomist performs positive patient identification and collection of various laboratory specimens on inpatients and outpatients, as needed. Receives specimens into the lab reception area, inputs specimen information into the laboratory information system and requests patient registration as necessary. Phlebotomists maintain specimen integrity during specimen collection, transport, and processing of samples received in the laboratory. Communicates specimen issues to caregivers. Provides customer service by greeting visitors, answering the telephone, transferring phone calls, faxing results, and assisting with specimen requirements. Performs other clerical or clinical duties as required by area of service. Patients served at Cook Children's range in age from newborn through the adolescent period. Every effort will be made to collect specimens in the least traumatic manner to both child and family, to include attention to age-appropriate child life issues and pain management techniques. Duties and Responsibilities Provides a communication link between laboratory staff, patient care providers and outreach clients to facilitate the provision of prompt, accurate, efficient laboratory services. Prepares patients and aseptically collects specimens utilizing written procedures and with an approach that considers patient age and level of anxiety. Ensures proper patient identification and accurate specimen labeling according to established procedures. Maintains patient identity through all phases of specimen processing. Ensures collection of proper specimens according to established procedures. Frequently requests and reviews collection pending reports during each shift and resolves all outstanding problems. Proper collection and handling of specimens for urine drug and COVID-19 screening on hospital employees using appropriate chain of custody guidelines when indicated. Handles contaminated specimens and material according to infection control guidelines and reports accidents or incidents appropriately. Assists with stock level maintenance in the processing area. Dates and distributes laboratory supplies upon arrival. Handling requests for lab tests to include transcription of physician's orders promptly and accurately according to procedure. Reviews medication, previous surgeries and other pertinent information that could influence the requested laboratory tests. Registers patients and orders testing efficiently and accurately for both hospital and reference laboratory patients as needed. Performs all other tasks/responsibilities as assigned.
