Potomac Pallets company history timeline

1958

In 1958, a contract was signed to haul wooden pallets for Ford Motor Co. in Dearborn, Michigan, thus commencing the first wooden pallet recycling program in the Midwest.

1960

The trail led upriver to the nation’s capital, and illuminated a dark truth about how Washington became the city it is today: The headstones were from Columbian Harmony Cemetery, a historic African American burial ground that was dug up and relocated in 1960 to make way for commercial development.

1963

Incorporated in 1963, Auto Pallets is now operated by Mitchell B. Foster and his son Charles M. Foster.

1983

In 1983, Mitchell B. Foster formed Action Pallets out of a need to offer customers the option to purchase newly manufactured pallets made to precise specifications.

1993

The Conservancy was incorporated on August 24, 1993 in Maryland as a nonprofit corporation.

2009

Musta, 48, says he specializes in “restorative justice.” He had known about the abandoned headstones since 2009, when someone kayaking on the Potomac posted pictures of them on a blog.

2010

Potomac Conservancy received formal accreditation in 2010 by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission.

2016

Stuart, a lawyer, bought it in 2016 and moved there with his wife and children.

2018

The new park will open in fall 2018 to the public for hiking, bird-watching, and other recreational activities allowed within the site’s conservation goals.
