1973: The management team at the Mount Washington Hotel made the difficult decision to shut down The Bretton Arms Country Inn to the public.
1982 – Leadership of the property was transferred to UCLA! Supported by Chancellor Charles E. Young, Sam Morabito of UCLA Business Enterprises, and former Executive Director of the ASUCLA Donald E. Findley, a plan to build a successful, self-supporting summer camp was finally in the works.
1985 – Bruin Woods welcomed its first vacationers in the summer of 1985.
The construction work was so successful that the Secretary of the Interior even recognized both the Mount Washington Hotel and the Bretton Arms Country Inn as a National Historical Landmark in 1985.
In a spell of further good news, the Bretton Woods Corporation significantly renovated The Bretton Arms Country Inn and reopened it as a wonderful boutique hotel in 1986.
In 1986, the United States Department of the Interior recognized the historical and architectural significance of The Mount Washington Hotel with a National Historic Landmark designation.
1997: In April, the hotel acquires 950 acres bordering the hotel, which extended its holdings to a total of 1,250.
2007: A major 50-million-dollar renovation of the Mount Washington Hotel commenced, which focused on fully refurbishing the building’s entire layout.
In January 2009 the Mount Washington Resort opened a 25,000 square-foot spa and a 25,000 square-foot conference center.
A similar undertaking occurred at the neighboring Bretton Arms Country inn, which had become the “Omni Bretton Arms Inn” in 2010.
